Cardinal Bucharis was an Ecclesiarchy priest who turned a remote shrine world into the heart of a breakaway empire. His rebellion, the Plague of Unbelief, tore through the south-western Imperium during the Age of Apostasy and only ended when his own subjects rose against him.
Who was Cardinal Bucharis?
Bucharis served the Ecclesiarchy on Gathalamor, a world where he preached the Imperial creed. When warp storms swallowed huge stretches of the galaxy’s south-western reaches, he seized the moment to carve out an empire of his own.
His pitch was simple and effective: Terra had fallen, and Gathalamor was now the true centre of the faith. That lie became the foundation of the Plague of Unbelief.
- Stationed on Gathalamor as a preaching cardinal
- Declared Terra lost and Gathalamor the new holy centre
- Launched the Plague of Unbelief during the Age of Apostasy
The conquests and the first cracks
With Admiral Sehalla and Colonel Gasto at his side, Bucharis conquered a swathe of worlds in a surprisingly short time. For a while, nothing seemed able to stop him.
Fenris was where the momentum broke. Bucharis threw millions of men at the Space Wolves’ homeworld, but the Fang proved impossible to take. A Space Wolf fleet arriving in orbit scattered his supporting ships and forced him to withdraw.
- Key allies: Admiral Sehalla and Colonel Gasto
- Fenris invasion failed against the Space Wolves and the Fang
Chiros and the rise of Dolan Chirosius
The next blow landed on Chiros, a forested world with only a few million people. Instead of surrendering, the entire population took up arms, with snipers in the hills and ambush teams throughout the woods. Bucharis’ forces eventually gave up on the planet.
That rebellion spread. Bucharis learned it was being led by a Confessor named Dolan Chirosius, and he ordered the man captured. Dolan was arrested in the Gathalamor system, publicly flogged across the planet, and then put on trial.
- Chiros resisted with its whole population and defeated Bucharis’ armies
- Confessor Dolan Chirosius led the spreading rebellion
- Bucharis had Dolan arrested, flogged, and tried
How Bucharis died
The trial was a catastrophic mistake. Bucharis let Dolan speak in his own defence, which gave the confessor a platform to preach to every world in the renegade empire. When Dolan’s body was thrown over the walls of the Cardinal Palace, it vanished soon after.
That was the spark. Worlds across Bucharis’ realm rose together, as if something was driving them. Bucharis ran for a shuttle at the star port, but the mob got to him first and tore him apart. Only a pile of ashes marked where he died.
- Dolan’s defence became a sermon heard across the empire
- Dolan’s body disappeared after being thrown from the palace walls
- Bucharis was killed by a mob while trying to flee
Legacy and the ring
Bucharis’ successor, Cardinal Asclomaedas, was so afraid of the heretic’s legacy that he had the remains and personal items buried in a psy-vault on Gathalamor. Followers of Bucharis later destroyed the vault’s records and collapsed the catacombs around it to keep their anti-saint from being disturbed.
The ring survived. Millennia later it became a source of hatred and ambition, powerful enough that Chaos forces under Tenebrus used it to fuel a massive bone-like cannon during the Battle of Gathalamor. Tenebrus escaped with the ring after the fighting.
- Asclomaedas hid Bucharis’ remains in a psy-vault
- Followers erased the vault’s location and collapsed the catacombs
- Bucharis’ ring later powered a Chaos cannon at the Battle of Gathalamor
