Erebus

Erebus is the First Chaplain of the Word Bearers and the man who nudged both Lorgar and Horus into the arms of Chaos. Without him, the Horus Heresy might never have happened at all.

Who erebus actually is

He’s a Space Marine of the XVII Legion, the Word Bearers, and a member of the Dark Council of Sicarus. He calls himself the Hand of Destiny, and he means it: he sees himself as the mortal instrument of the Ruinous Powers.

Born on Colchis around the late 30th millennium, he started out as a nobody. The boy who’d become Erebus was a commoner’s son with a taste for manipulation, and he murdered a studious, well-liked local boy named Erebus, took his name and tattoos, and walked away from his old life. The rest is heresy.

  • Title: First Chaplain of the Word Bearers, Grand Apostle of the Dark Council
  • Homeworld: Sicarus (Dark Council seat); born on Colchis
  • Allegiance: Word Bearers, Chaos Undivided (formerly the Imperium)
  • Active: M30 to present day

How he turned Lorgar and Horus

Erebus was already a devotee of the Old Faith of Colchis, which was Chaos worship dressed up as religion, long before the Emperor found the planet. When the Emperor arrived, Erebus was the only person there who wasn’t awed by him. He saw the Anathema, and he felt excited.

After joining the Word Bearers, he worked on his primarch. Lorgar’s search for something to worship made him easy to steer, and Erebus helped push him toward the Chaos Gods. Then he helped do the same to Horus, which is the act that lit the Horus Heresy.

Why he matters

Erebus is one of the founding causes of the entire setting’s central catastrophe. The Horus Heresy, the Imperium’s near-death, the ten thousand years of grimdark that followed: he’s one of the people who made that happen on purpose.

He’s also still around. Erebus survived the Heresy and remains a major figure in the Word Bearers and on the Dark Council, which makes him one of the oldest active villains in the setting.

What he’s like

He’s not a berserker. Erebus is patient, soft-spoken, and completely certain of his own righteousness. He doesn’t regret anything, because in his view there was never a choice to regret.

His signature quote sums it up: he says he’s always been on this road, never turning, never deviating, and that a mind too small to doubt is blessed. That’s the whole character in one line.
