The Dark Council is the ruling body of the Word Bearers Legion, a group of eight powerful Dark Apostles who command the Legion while their primarch, Lorgar, remains in seclusion. They’re based in the Basilica of the Word and wield immense authority over the Legion’s affairs.
What is the Dark Council?
It’s the main ruling body of the Word Bearers, the Chaos Legion that worships the Chaos Gods as deities. The council leads the Legion in Lorgar’s absence, since he’s been isolated inside the Templum Inficio for millennia and has forbidden anyone from disturbing his meditations.
The council operates from the Basilica of the Word, an immense cathedral fortress. From there, they direct the Legion’s wars and spiritual campaigns across the galaxy.
Powers and authority
The council can elevate a First Acolyte of a Host to the rank of Dark Apostle, a key step in the Legion’s hierarchy. They’re also said to have the power to pluck the souls of those who fail them from the warp and torment them for eternity, a terrifying deterrent that keeps their subordinates in line.

- Rule the Legion in Lorgar’s stead.
