Inquisitor Kryptman

Fidus Kryptman is a Lord Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos, the man who first named the Tyranids and spent his career trying to stop them. He’s the Imperium’s leading expert on the alien threat, and also one of its most radical operators.

Overview

Kryptman serves the Ordo Xenos, the Inquisition’s branch for alien threats, and holds the rank of Lord Inquisitor. He earned the title Hero of the Macharian Heresy, though he’s remembered today for something far bigger: being the first to formally recognise the Tyranids as a threat to the whole galaxy.

He’s fought in all three major Tyrannic Wars, which makes him one of the few Imperial figures to see the swarm up close across multiple centuries. That experience shaped his reputation as brilliant, ruthless, and willing to cross lines other Inquisitors won’t.

Naming the Tyranids

Kryptman’s defining discovery came on Tyran, a dead world stripped bare by an unknown alien race. There he found a protected data-codex that revealed what had happened, and he gave the threat its name: Tyranids.

He didn’t stop at a label. Kryptman warned Marneus Calgar, Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, about the approaching Hive Fleet Behemoth. That warning gave the Ultramarines time to prepare and call in Battlefleet Tempestus, and together they broke the fleet.

Tarsis Ultra and the Exterminatus betrayal

During the Third Tyrannic War in 999.M41, a tendril of Hive Fleet Leviathan closed on Tarsis Ultra. Kryptman joined the defence, sharing his knowledge with the assembled commanders and bringing along Magos Biologis Vianco Locard and a Deathwatch kill-team under Captain Bannon.

When the next planet in the swarm’s path, Chordelis, couldn’t be evacuated in time, Kryptman wanted Exterminatus to deny the Tyranids the biomass. Captain Uriel Ventris argued hard against it and backed a plan from Lord Admiral Lazlo Tiberius to destroy a Hive Ship by detonating a hydrogen-plasma refinery in space. Kryptman told Ventris he’d hold off, then invoked Exterminatus anyway with help from the Mortifactors.

He also had his retinue study Tyranid corpses during the fighting. When a Lictor ambushed his team, the Deathwatch drove it off and Kryptman ordered it captured alive, not killed.

The Galactic Cordon and Kryptman’s Gamble

After Leviathan, Kryptman took his most extreme step: the Galactic Cordon. He ordered worlds in the swarm’s path subjected to Exterminatus and had surrounding planets purged to starve the Tyranids of food.

The scale of it, and the death toll, turned the Inquisition against him. Kryptman was declared a radical and a traitor, and he went into hiding. Sources differ on the details of his later activities, but the Cordon and his fall from grace are the core of his story.
