Uriel Ventris

Uriel Ventris is the captain of the Ultramarines 4th Company and the star of Graham McNeill’s Ultramarines novels. He matters because he’s the poster boy for a Space Marine who broke the rules, paid for it, and earned his way back, and his story tracks the wider shift from Firstborn to Primaris Marines.

Who is Uriel Ventris?

Ventris was born on Calth in 876.M41 and raised on an underground farm. The Ultramarines recruited him at six, trained him at the Agiselus Barracks on Macragge, and he joined the 4th Company in 909.M41.

He’s a descendant of Lucian Ventris, a 1st Company veteran sergeant who died defending Macragge’s northern polar fortress during the Battle for Macragge. That bloodline matters to him, and it comes up in the novels.

From sergeant to captain

Ventris rose through the ranks to become a Veteran Sergeant under Captain Idaeus. At the Battle of Bridge Two-Four on Thracia, Idaeus sacrificed himself to take the objective, handed Ventris his power sword, and left him in command.

Marneus Calgar confirmed Ventris as the new captain of the 4th Company shortly after. Before all that, he’d also served a stint in the Deathwatch, the Ordo Xenos chamber militant that hunts alien threats.

  • First mission as captain: putting down a rebellion on Pavonis, where the Ultramarines ran into the newly awakened Nightbringer.
  • He was awarded the White Rose of Pavonis, a clasp he wears on his cloak.
  • His mentor Idaeus died at Bridge Two-Four, passing on his power sword.

Exile and redemption

During the tyranid invasion in Warriors of Ultramar, Ventris defied the Codex Astartes and used unorthodox tactics to win. On his return to Macragge he was censured and exiled from the Chapter.

His exile took him into the Eye of Terror, where he made enemies who’d come back to haunt him later. He was eventually redeemed and restored to command of the 4th Company.

Primaris and the Nightbringer

After a decade off the page, Ventris returned in The Swords of Calth, having crossed the Rubicon Primaris. He’s now a Primaris Marine, which gave the books a way to explore what that transformation does to a character and to the bonds between battle-brothers.

He’s still hunting the Nightbringer, the xenos entity that first scarred his mind on Pavonis. The novel follows that grudge and the psychological damage it left behind.
