Macragge

Macragge is the homeworld of the Ultramarines and the capital of Ultramar, the only Imperial realm besides Terra and Mars allowed to rule other planets. It’s where Roboute Guilliman grew up, and it’s one of the most important worlds in Warhammer 40k.

What Macragge is

Macragge sits in the Ultima Segmentum, in the Ultramar subsector and the Macragge System. It’s an Adeptus Astartes homeworld with a population of around 400 million and a tithe grade of Adeptus Non, meaning it doesn’t pay the standard Imperial tithe.

Its unusual status comes from a rare grant: apart from Terra and Mars, it’s the only planet in the Imperium allowed dominion over other worlds. In Macragge’s case, that means the rest of Ultramar.

Before the Imperium

Macragge was one of humanity’s lost colonies, cut off during the Age of Strife. Its industries survived relatively intact, and its people kept an authoritarian but cohesive society. They preserved short-range warp-capable craft and kept building sub-light ships, which let them stay in touch with a few neighbouring systems even through the worst warp storms.

The planet was ruled by two officials called Consuls. When the infant primarch Roboute Guilliman arrived, he was adopted by one of them, Konor. Guilliman grew into a gifted administrator and military genius.

While Guilliman was away putting down a bandit revolt, Konor was usurped and poisoned by his fellow Consul, Gallan. Konor had pushed reforms for the common people, which annoyed the idle rich. Guilliman came back, defeated Gallan’s forces, and was elected sole Consul. He then rebuilt Macragge as a meritocracy, following his father’s example.

The Great Crusade and after

The Emperor found Guilliman after hearing about him on Espandor, a world in a neighbouring system. Guilliman took command of the Ultramarines and made Macragge the heart of Ultramar.

Since then Macragge has been attacked repeatedly. It weathered the Horus Heresy, the Tyranid Hive Fleet Behemoth, the 13th Black Crusade, and the Plague Wars. Through all of it, it’s stayed the Ultramarines’ base and the capital of their realm.

Why it matters

Macragge isn’t just another Space Marine homeworld. It’s the centre of a mini-empire within the Imperium, and its ruler, Guilliman, is now one of the most powerful figures in the setting.

If you’re following Ultramarines lore, Macragge is the place to start. It’s the anchor for Ultramar, the Ultramarines, and a big chunk of Imperial politics.
