The Seventh Black Crusade was Abaddon the Despoiler’s 811.M37 campaign out of the Eye of Terror, remembered as the Ghost War. It’s the crusade where he hunted Blood Angels gene-seed to trade with Fabius Bile, and it nearly wiped out a First Founding Chapter.
What the seventh black crusade actually was
Abaddon led his forces out of the Eye of Terror past Cadia in 811.M37, then vanished. That disappearing act earned the campaign its nickname, the Ghost War.
What followed was years of raids, false trails and disinformation across Segmentum Obscurus rather than one big pitched war. Chaos struck at isolated worlds, spread confusion and paranoia, then withdrew back into the Eye. The Imperium could only wait for the next strike.
Abaddon’s real prize wasn’t territory. He wanted Blood Angels gene-seed to barter with Fabius Bile, which is what turned a raiding campaign into something personal for the sons of Sanguinius.
The battle of Mackan
Mackan was the crusade’s defining battle. The full Blood Angels Chapter hit a huge Black Legion warband led by Abaddon himself, backed by lieutenants Iskandar Khayon and Telemachon Lyras, with Rampagers reinforcements alongside.
It went badly. The Blood Angels were nearly annihilated, and Abaddon killed Captain Acrion in single combat, a deliberate echo of Horus felling Sanguinius. The Black Legion then desecrated the dead and wrecked their gene-seed so it couldn’t be recovered.
Weeks later, Reclusiarch Thalastian Jorus and his Death Company came out of hiding and ambushed Abaddon’s honour guard, killing many before they were cut down. The Black Legion left Mackan soon after.
Elsewhere, Khârn the Betrayer ravaged the Blood Angels strike cruiser Sanguine Tear, and the Carcharodons hit Abaddon’s fleet at Midian as it chased the routed Blood Angels. The Carcharodons’ scouring was recorded on the Cemetery World of Hypasitis.
- Blood Angels nearly destroyed, with heavy losses
- Captain Acrion killed by Abaddon in single combat
- Chief officer Lheorvine Ukris among the Black Legion’s dead
- 80 billion Imperial soldiers killed across the crusade
Why it matters
The Seventh is one of the clearest examples of Abaddon fighting a war of attrition and psychology, not conquest. He bled a First Founding Chapter, spread panic across a whole segmentum, and walked away with what he came for.
It also sets up the Black Legion’s later character. Iskandar Khayon, Telemachon Lyras and Lheorvine Ukris all feature here, and their roles tie directly into the events of the Black Legion novels.
How it fits the wider Black Crusades
It’s the seventh of Abaddon’s thirteen Black Crusades, sitting between the Sixth and the Eighth. Like most of them, it’s less a single war than a long, ugly campaign with a specific objective.
Sources differ on some details, especially the exact sequence of raids and the scale of the Carcharodons’ intervention, so treat the finer points as open to interpretation.
