Segmentum Obscurus is the northern fifth of the Imperium’s galaxy, a region defined by the Eye of Terror and the long war against Chaos that spills out of it. If a story involves Cadia, the Gothic War, or a Chaos incursion pushing toward Terra, it’s probably happening here.
What segmentum obscurus actually is
The Imperium splits the galaxy into five segmentums, and Obscurus is the one sitting north of Holy Terra. Its Segmentum Fortress, the administrative and naval hub for the whole region, is at Cypra Mundi.
The name is earned. Obscurus covers a huge spread of sectors, many of them poorly charted, and the warp itself is unreliable here because of the Eye of Terror. Travel and communication are harder than in most of the Imperium, which is why the region has always felt like a frontier even when it’s heavily militarised.
The Eye of Terror and the Cadian Gate
The Eye of Terror is the single most important feature of the segmentum. It’s a permanent warp rift and the spiritual homeland of the Chaos Space Marines, and it sits right inside Obscurus.
The Cadian Gate was the stable corridor in and out of the Eye, and Cadia guarded it for millennia. That’s why so much of the Imperium’s military weight, including the Astartes Praeses chapters, was concentrated in this one region.
- Eye of Terror: the warp rift that defines the segmentum
- Cadian Gate: the main stable route out of the Eye
- Cadia: the fortress world that held the Gate until the Thirteenth Black Crusade
- Astartes Praeses: Space Marine chapters founded specifically to watch the Eye
Imperium Nihilus and the current state of the region
After the Thirteenth Black Crusade broke Cadia and Roboute Guilliman returned, the Great Rift tore the galaxy in half. Most of Segmentum Obscurus ended up on the far side, inside what’s now called Imperium Nihilus.
That means the region is largely cut off from Terra. Worlds that used to answer to Cypra Mundi now survive on their own, and the Nachmund Gauntlet is one of the few reliable routes back to the loyalist half of the Imperium.
Notable worlds and regions
Obscurus is packed with named locations that show up across novels, codices and games. Fenris, home of the Space Wolves, sits here. So does Medusa, the Iron Hands’ world, and Caliban, the Dark Angels’ destroyed homeworld.
The Gothic Sector is the setting for the classic Battlefleet Gothic conflict. The Calixis and Askellon sectors anchor the Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader RPGs, and the Koronus Expanse is the frontier beyond them.

FAQ
Where is Segmentum Obscurus?
It’s the northern segmentum of the Imperium, sitting above Holy Terra. Its Segmentum Fortress is at Cypra Mundi.
Why is it called Obscurus?
Because it’s the least stable and least charted of the five segmentums. The Eye of Terror sits inside it, which makes warp travel and communication unusually dangerous.
Is Segmentum Obscurus part of Imperium Nihilus now?
Most of it, yes. After the Great Rift opened, the bulk of the segmentum ended up on the far side of the rift, cut off from Terra.
