Adeptus Administratum

The Adeptus Administratum is the Imperium’s bureaucracy, the vast machine of clerks, scribes and adepts that keeps the whole thing from collapsing. It’s the largest branch of the Adeptus Terra, and without it, nothing gets paid for, supplied, or recorded.

What the Administratum actually does

Everything the Imperium needs to function on paper passes through the Administratum. Its billions of officials on Terra and across the galaxy run population censuses, work out tithes, archive records, and handle the countless other tasks that keep the Imperium running.

It’s also spectacularly inefficient. Whole departments have been lost or forgotten, and some continue performing their original duties long after those duties stopped mattering. Despite that, the Administratum is so essential that the Imperium would grind to a halt without it.

Leadership and structure

The Administratum sits under the Adeptus Terra, and its head is the Master of the Administratum, currently Violeta Roskavler. That post is widely considered the most powerful seat on the High Lords of Terra, which tells you how much weight the bureaucracy carries.

The organisation was founded in M30 as the Imperial Administration, originally under Malcador, who held the title Chief of the Imperial Administration. Over ten billion adepts are thought to be involved in administering the Imperial Palace alone.

Ranks, dress and daily life

Most adepts work in enormous vaults at logic-engines, and by Imperial standards they’re considered well educated. Many positions are hereditary, with parents passing their rank and duties down to children who carry on the same work their ancestors did.

Members wear monastic-style robes, with colour signalling rank and responsibility. The lowest scribes wear black, and higher ranks move through progressively lighter shades of grey.

Power without prestige

Of all the Imperium’s divisions, the Administratum is often seen as the least glamorous. That reputation is misleading. Its senior members rank among the most powerful people in the Imperium, and the organisation is so intertwined with the Adeptus Terra that the two names get used interchangeably in some places.

The Administratum also commands serious military muscle: the Imperial Guard, the Militarum Tempestus, and the Imperial Navy all fall under its armed forces.
