The Excoriators’ Chapter

The Excoriators are a Second Founding Space Marine Chapter descended from the Imperial Fists. They’re famous for grinding, stubborn defence and a culture that treats scars and battle damage as sacred records of survival.

What the Excoriators chapter is

The Excoriators were created during the Second Founding, the same wave that split the Imperial Fists into successor Chapters like the Black Templars and Crimson Fists. Their first Chapter Master was Demetrius Katafalque, a former Imperial Fists Captain.

They’re listed among the Astartes Praeses, the Chapters named in the ancient Mythos Angelica Mortis as watchers over the Eye of Terror. That alone tells you the Imperium trusts them with some of its most dangerous standing duty.

Why they matter

The Excoriators embody the defensive stubbornness of Dorn’s bloodline taken to an extreme. Their doctrine is attrition warfare: hold the line, absorb the punishment, and make the enemy pay in blood for every metre.

That mindset traces back to the Siege of Terra, where the Marines who’d become the Excoriators helped defend the Imperial Palace walls during the Horus Heresy. They’ve carried that ‘survive no matter the odds’ attitude ever since.

They also answered the Last Wall Protocol during the War of the Beast, joining other Imperial Fists successors in the Phall System and donating warriors to rebuild their parent Chapter.

Culture and combat doctrine

Excoriator culture revolves around remembrance, bloodshed, and pain. Their armour is only repaired to the point of working again; the dents and scars stay, annotated in High Gothic with the date and place they were earned.

Facial scars are a point of pride. Battle-brothers deliberately stitch wounds so the scarring heals worse, leaving many veterans with grotesque, heavily marked faces. Disputes get settled in a rite called Trial by the Blade, a duel won by the first to draw blood from an opponent’s face.
