Blanks (also called Untouchables, Pariahs, or psychic nulls) are rare human mutants whose minds project a negative psychic field. That field disrupts warp phenomena around them and makes them immune to psychic powers. In a galaxy where psykers are feared and watched, a person who simply switches the warp off is both a weapon and an outcast.
What a blank actually is
A blank is a human mutant born with a so-called pariah gene. Their mind leaks a negative psionic field that drains warp energy toward a soul that reads as a void. In Imperial classification, a true blank is an omega-minus psyker, usually just called omega class.
That puts them at the far negative end of the Assignment. Lesser negative psykers exist too, but they’re only partially resistant, so they aren’t classed as blanks. Full blanks are the real psychic nulls.
They’re exclusive to humanity. No xenos species is known to produce them, and while positive psychic talent has no clear genetic link, blank parents tend to have blank children.
Biology and the pariah gene
The pariah gene is inheritable, and some populations throw up untouchable births far more often than others. The feral people of Vessor are the usual example.
That said, nobody’s sure a single gene explains everything. The Emperor banned research into the source after experiments by the Imperial Archotechnologist Corps and the Mechanicum ended in disaster early in the Great Crusade. Theories range from human experimentation to something older, and none of them are confirmed.
Life as an outcast
Most humans find blanks deeply unsettling without knowing why. Their presence feels wrong, and people instinctively avoid or resent them. That social ostracism follows them everywhere, which is part of why so many end up in organisations that value what they are rather than who they are.
How blanks are used
Blanks serve the Imperium in several roles, and their abilities can be natural, trained, or surgically augmented.
- Sisters of Silence: the best-known all-blank fighting force, sworn to the Emperor.
- Officio Assassinorum: the Culexus Temple fields blanks as anti-psyker assassins. Project ‘Black Pariah’ was a related experiment.
- Inquisition: blanks serve as agents and anti-warp assets.
- Collegia Titanica: some Titans carry blank crews to shield them from psychic attack.
- Rogue Traders: a few keep blanks on staff for the same reason.

FAQ
Are blanks and Pariahs the same thing?
Yes, mostly. Blank, Untouchable, psychic null, and Pariah all refer to the same phenomenon. Some sources use Pariah more narrowly for the gene or for specific Imperial programs.
Can a blank be a psyker?
No. A blank is classified as a negative psyker (omega-minus), which means they nullify psychic energy instead of channeling it. They’re immune to psychic powers rather than capable of using them.
Why do people hate blanks?
Their negative psychic field makes normal humans feel uneasy or repulsed, often without understanding why. That instinctive dread leads to widespread social rejection.
