The Enslavers

The Enslavers are Warp-native predators that don’t conquer worlds with armies. They get inside a psyker’s head, use that brain as a doorway, and pour more of their kind into realspace, leaving behind populations of drooling mindslaves. They’re the reason the Imperium treats unsanctioned witches as a planetary-scale threat.

What the Enslavers are

They’re biological entities native to the Warp, known by many names across the galaxy: Psyrens, Krell, dominators, puppeteers. The Imperium’s scholars file them under the formal tag spiritus subjugator.

They aren’t daemons in the usual sense and they aren’t a Chaos faction. They’re their own thing, a Warp-borne species with a taste for psychic minds. By the Age of the Imperium, humanity has largely forgotten where they came from, and what’s left is fragmentary data on how they look and feed.

How they enslave a world

An Enslaver latches onto a psyker and dominates their mind. That psyker then becomes a living gateway, letting more Enslavers cross from the Warp into realspace. Once enough of them are through, the infestation spreads fast.

The scale is the frightening part. One unsanctioned witch on Hive Skorpios was enough to turn the entire hive’s population into mindslaves within three days and have a whole continent at war within three weeks. That account comes from Inquisitor Mallen of the Ordo Xenos, and it’s the standard warning the Inquisition gives about psychic laxity.

  • A single rogue psyker can be the seed of a planetary catastrophe.
  • Enslavers use transmuted psyker bodies as portals, more than hosts.
  • Infestations can jump between worlds if they aren’t contained.

Their role in the War in Heaven

The Enslavers’ origins trace back to the War in Heaven, fought millions of years ago between the C’tan-led Necrons and the Old Ones with their successor races. The Old Ones engineered psychic warrior species to fight their war, and the turbulence those young races caused in the Warp turned the once-calm Empyrean into a predator-filled hellscape.

The Enslavers were among the worst things to come out of that. They broke through the dimensional boundary, dominated the young races, and used their bodies to pull in more of their kin. The Old Ones’ own creations turned on them, and their empire collapsed. According to one account, the galaxy was left a wasteland until the psyker swarm died off and new life could emerge.

Why the Inquisition still cares

Both the Ordo Malleus and the Ordo Xenos keep files on the Enslavers. The Malleus claim them for their Warp origins; the Xenos claim them as an alien species. That overlap makes them a rare shared headache.

Major outbreaks have happened over the millennia. The Storm Wardens fought a large multi-world infestation in late M36 called the Nemesis Incident, and Inquisition forces destroyed numerous Enslavers in the Scintilla System in 260.993.M41. Trazyn the Infinite is said to keep an ossified Enslaver husk among his relics, which tells you how rare intact specimens are.

Key facts

  • The Enslavers are Warp-native predators also called Psyrens, Krell, dominators or puppeteers.
  • They dominate psykers and use their bodies as portals to bring more Enslavers into realspace.
  • One rogue psyker on Hive Skorpios led to the whole hive becoming mindslaves in three days.
  • Their rise is tied to the War in Heaven and the fall of the Old Ones.
  • The Ordo Malleus and Ordo Xenos both keep watch on them.
  • The Storm Wardens fought a major infestation, the Nemesis Incident, in late M36.

FAQ

Are the Enslavers daemons?

No. They’re Warp-native biological entities, but they aren’t part of Chaos and don’t serve the Chaos Gods. The Imperium treats them as a separate threat.

How do the Enslavers get into realspace?

They dominate a psyker’s mind and use that person’s body as a portal, then bring more of their kind through. That’s why unsanctioned psykers are considered a planetary-scale risk.

Why did the Enslavers matter in the War in Heaven?

They helped end the Old Ones’ empire. After the psychic races of the War in Heaven churned up the Warp, the Enslavers broke through and turned the Old Ones’ own creations against them.
