The Golden Throne is the life-support machine and psychic anchor that’s kept the Emperor alive for ten thousand years. It sits in the Imperial Palace on Terra, and without it the Emperor dies, the Astronomican goes dark, and a Warp rift opens under humanity’s homeworld.
What it actually is
It’s an ancient cybernetic device: a bulky, gold-plated chair suspended above colossal mechanised doors, wired into the portal by huge bundles of cables and conduits. The Emperor’s ruined body is sealed inside, preserved by stasis fields and psi-fusion reactors.
The hall around it is enormous. Sources say it could fit six fully equipped Space Marine companies, and the doors beneath the throne are supposedly wide enough for a Warhound Titan to walk through upright.
Where it came from
The Emperor found the throne in sunken ruins in Asia’s deserts, dating back to at least the Dark Age of Technology, maybe earlier. He was never fully sure whether the idea was originally his or whether the wreckage inspired him.
He restored it to serve the Webway Project: his plan to give humanity safe access to the Eldar Webway and cut out Warp travel entirely. A second, similar device called Dark Glass was found during the Great Crusade and may have been a prototype.
Then the Horus Heresy happened. With the Webway breached and daemons pouring through, the throne went from a gateway to a cage. Malcador the Sigillite sat on it briefly to hold the line while the Emperor faced Horus, and the experience killed him.
Why it matters now
The Emperor is neither alive nor dead. He’s tethered to the throne on the brink of both, and the throne is the only thing keeping the broken Webway gate sealed shut.
It also powers the Astronomican, the psychic beacon that lets Imperial ships navigate the Warp. If the throne fails, that light goes out and Terra becomes a daemonic warzone. The Mechanicus keeps patching it, but nobody truly understands how it works anymore.
- Keeps the Emperor’s body preserved and his mind active.
- Seals the ruined Webway gate under the Imperial Palace.
- Fuels the Astronomican, humanity’s only reliable Warp navigation.
- Eats thousands of psykers a day, fed to it by the Black Ships.
- Slowly failing, and no one can build a replacement.
The costs and the mystery
The throne runs on souls. Psykers are gathered by the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, shipped to Terra, and consumed to keep the machine running. That’s the daily price of the Imperium’s survival.
There’s a darker question hanging over all of it: is the Emperor still guiding humanity, or is something else wearing his face? The lore leaves that deliberately open, and different sources handle it differently.

FAQ
What happens if the Golden Throne fails?
The Emperor dies, the Astronomican goes dark, and the sealed Webway gate under the Imperial Palace bursts open. Terra would be overrun by daemons and the Imperium would likely collapse.
Who built the Golden Throne?
Nobody knows for sure. The Emperor found it in ruins dating back to the Dark Age of Technology or earlier, and even he wasn’t certain whether he designed it or just rebuilt someone else’s work.
Why does the Emperor need to stay on it?
His body is destroyed and he’s kept in a state between life and death. The throne sustains him, and he in turn holds the Webway gate shut. Neither can function without the other.
