The Primarch Project was the Emperor’s attempt to create twenty gene-forged sons, each one a general and a living weapon meant to lead a Space Marine Legion. It’s the origin point for the Primarchs, the Horus Heresy, and a lot of what goes wrong in the setting.
What the project actually was
The Emperor had already been fighting on Terra with genetically modified warriors, but those early troops turned out hyper-violent and short-lived. So he went bigger. Starting in M29, he set out to create twenty cloned ‘children’, each grown in accelerated gene-culturing chambers in a facility on Terra.
The goal was generals. Each Primarch was meant to be second only to the Emperor in skill, ability, and raw power, and each would lead one of twenty Legions of superhuman warriors. The Emperor oversaw the work himself, alongside the Perpetual Erda and Biotechnical Division Director Amar Astarte.
Why the Emperor wanted them
One reading is that the Primarchs were meant to replace humanity. Fearing that all of mankind would eventually fall to Chaos, the Emperor hoped to engineer a pure race completely immune to corruption, and the Primarchs were the first step.
That’s not the official line, though. Followers of the Emperor insist the Primarchs weren’t replacements at all, but shining examples of what humanity could be if it stayed free of corruption. The two versions don’t really reconcile, and the setting never settles it for you.
Forbidden science and the Chaos bargain
Several sources claim the Emperor didn’t build the Primarchs with conventional science alone. Ingethel the Ascended says he used forbidden sciences and arcane lore pulled from the Warp, and Eldrad Ulthran says much the same about dark powers. It’s also speculated that the energies and knowledge he used came from a Warp Portal on Molech.
Erda served as the ‘mother’ of the Primarchs, contributing her own genetic material alongside the Emperor’s. Whatever the exact method, the project worked, and then it was stolen out from under him.
The scattering
Just before the Primarchs matured, a great Warp vortex tore them from the Emperor’s lab and flung them across the galaxy. They landed on separate worlds, far beyond his reach, and grew up without him. It’s speculated that Chaos also tampered with the infants on the way out.
Who’s responsible depends on who you ask. One account says Argel Tal and his men were sent back in time inside the Eye of Terror to the Emperor’s laboratory, where Ingethel the Ascended convinced them to destroy the Gellar Fields protecting the infants. The moment those fields dropped, the vortex took them.
Erda says she opened the vortex herself, to save her children from whatever fate the Emperor had planned. And several Primarchs, including Konrad Curze, Roboute Guilliman, and even Sanguinius, came to believe the scattering and their upbringing on distant worlds had been engineered by the Emperor all along.
- Begun in M29 on Terra
- Twenty Primarchs, each meant to lead one Legion
- Overseen by the Emperor, Erda, and Amar Astarte
- Scattered by a Warp vortex before maturation
- Three competing explanations for who caused it
Key facts
- The Primarch Project began in M29, with the Emperor aiming to create twenty cloned sons.
- Each Primarch was designed to lead one of twenty Space Marine Legions.
- Erda supplied genetic material as the Primarchs’ ‘mother’; Amar Astarte helped run the programme.
- A Warp vortex scattered the infants before they matured, and accounts of who caused it conflict.
- The project is the root cause of the Horus Heresy and the Legions’ later divide.
FAQ
How many Primarchs were there?
Twenty were created. Two of them were later expunged from Imperial records, which is why you’ll usually hear about eighteen.
Who scattered the Primarchs?
Sources disagree. One blames Argel Tal’s time-lost warband and Ingethel the Ascended, another says Erda opened the vortex deliberately, and some Primarchs suspected the Emperor planned it.
Did the Emperor use Chaos to make the Primarchs?
It’s strongly implied. Ingethel and Eldrad both say he used Warp-derived knowledge or dark powers, and Molech is often named as where he got them.
