The Skitarii are the cybernetic infantry of the Adeptus Mechanicus, the tech-priests’ own military force. They’re mind-wiped soldiers, more machine than human, and they fight for the Machine God with cold, relentless efficiency.
What the Skitarii are
Skitarii (singular: skitarius) are the primary military arm of the Adeptus Mechanicus, serving alongside the Collegia Titanica and the Cult Mechanicus battle congregations. Their forces are organised into the Legiones Skitarii.
They’re sometimes called Tech-Guard. Each soldier is a cyborg, heavily augmented and mentally conditioned, often mind-wiped to remove fear, doubt, and independent thought. That makes them utterly obedient and unnervingly precise in battle.
Origins on Mars
The first Skitarii were created on Mars during the Age of Strife, likely before the Cult Mechanicus even existed. They grew out of scavenger clans that roamed the red planet’s surface, surviving by recovering technology and adapting it into their own bodies.
Over time those scavenger-cyborgs became a real fighting force, wielded by the Fabricator-General of Mars. They were organised into small, self-sufficient armies called conclaves, each dedicated to a particular branch of technology. Some specialised in atomantic tech, others in plasma relics, and rumours persist of conclaves that studied forbidden or xenos technology under the watch of the Priests of Mars.
The Horus Heresy and the schism
At the outbreak of the Horus Heresy there were roughly thirty conclaves. About two-thirds sided with the traitor Fabricator-General Kelbor-Hal and his New Mechanicum, fighting for Horus. The remaining third stayed loyal to the Emperor and followed the exiled Fabricator Locum, Zagreus Kane.
Kelbor-Hal’s hold over the Skitarii wasn’t absolute. Their core programming said they served the Fabricator-General, who in turn served the Mechanicum. Loyalists argued that Hal had failed the Mechanicum through the Death of Innocence, so he’d forfeited his authority. Hal saw the problem and turned to scrapcode to force obedience, a move that shaped how the Mechanicus views its own troops ever since.
How they fight
Skitarii are built for attrition and precision rather than glory. They advance in disciplined formations, lay down massed fire, and don’t break. Their augmetics let them see in darkness, shrug off wounds that would kill a normal soldier, and interface directly with their weapons and commanders.
On the tabletop and in novels they’re the Mechanicus rank and file: radium carbines, arc weapons, and galvanic rifles, backed by heavier battle servitors and walkers. They’re not the elite of the faction, but they’re the backbone.

FAQ
Are Skitarii still human?
Barely. They’re heavily augmented cyborgs, and most are mind-wiped to remove independent thought. What’s left is a soldier that thinks like a machine and follows orders without question.
Who do the Skitarii serve?
They serve the Adeptus Mechanicus and, through it, the Fabricator-General of Mars. Their programming ties them to that office, which is why the Horus Heresy split them between loyalist and traitor factions.
What’s the difference between Skitarii and Tech-Guard?
Nothing. Tech-Guard is just another name for the Skitarii, used in some older sources.
