The Mentor Legion, usually just called the Mentors, is a loyalist Space Marine chapter that treats warfare like a research project. Instead of fighting its own campaigns, it lends squads to other Imperial forces and studies how they fight.
What the Mentor Legion actually does
The Mentors don’t wage war the way most chapters do. Their specialty is reinforcements and support: they loan squads to the Imperial Guard or to other Space Marine chapters for a single battle, or sometimes an entire campaign.
The point isn’t charity. Returning squads bring back detailed records of how those forces fight, which builds an archive the chapter treats as priceless. The hosts get superior warriors for a while; the Mentors get data.
That habit makes them insular and slow to trust other chapters. They’d rather work alone, and they keep their homeworld and fortress-monastery secret.
Founding, gene-seed and chapter number
The Mentors were raised during the 26th Founding. The Adeptus Terra gave them the colours and chapter number of the Star Scorpions, a 25th Founding chapter that was lost in the warp and later declared dead by the Emperor’s decree.
That inheritance was mostly symbolic. The Star Scorpions’ gene-seed had degraded so badly that the Adeptus Mechanicus couldn’t rebuild the chapter from it. The Mentors instead received a fresh generation of genetic material drawn from Ultramarines stock (or one of their successor lines).
Sources don’t agree on every detail here. The Lexicanum entry lists the Star Scorpions under founding chapter while noting the Ultramarines as the gene-seed source, and it cites the 26th Founding, so treat the lineage as Ultramarines-descended in practice.
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Founding | 26th Founding |
| Gene-seed | Ultramarines (or a successor) |
| Chapter number | 888, inherited from the Star Scorpions |
| Chapter Master | Nisk Ran-Thawll |
| Homeworld | Unknown, closely guarded |
| Colours | White with green helmet, chest and backpack |
| Specialty | Reinforcements and support |
Why they matter
The Mentors are one of the clearest examples of a chapter that wins by thinking rather than by numbers. Their whole purpose is fusing science, military technology and the art of war into something sharper.
They’re also a useful reminder that the Adeptus Astartes isn’t monolithic. Plenty of chapters hoard relics or glory; the Mentors hoard knowledge, and they’ll fight beside almost anyone to get it.
Where you’ll find them now
The Mentors are currently committed against Biel-Tan Craftworld Eldar and the Orks of the Charadon System.
Their strength sits at roughly Ultramarines levels, and their marines are noted for unusual size, strength and durability.
- Secretive, self-reliant, distrustful of other chapters
- Loans squads out rather than running its own wars
- Keeps homeworld and fortress-monastery hidden
- Currently fighting Biel-Tan and Charadon Orks

FAQ
Are the Mentors a successor chapter of the Ultramarines?
Their gene-seed comes from the Ultramarines or one of their descendants, so yes in practice. Their colours and chapter number, though, were inherited from the Star Scorpions.
Why do the Mentors loan out their squads?
To gather information. Squads sent to fight alongside the Imperial Guard or other chapters come back with records of how those forces operate, which the chapter prizes above almost anything else.
Who leads the Mentor Legion?
Chapter Master Nisk Ran-Thawll. Beyond that, the chapter keeps its leadership and home base deliberately obscure.
