The Distortion Cannon

The Distortion Cannon, often called the D-Cannon, is an Eldar weapon that rips a temporary hole in reality and lets the Warp do the killing. It’s one of the strangest and most feared weapons in the 41st millennium, and it’s pure Aeldari technology.

What the distortion cannon actually does

It uses the same principles that let ships enter the Warp, but on a much smaller scale. When it fires, a patch of realspace briefly collapses in on itself, creating a miniature warp hole.

Anything caught in that hole is in serious trouble. Complex gravitational forces can tear a target apart, or the victim gets dragged bodily into warp space. A direct hit might dump you into deep space or the heart of a star.

  • Also known as the D-Cannon, displacer cannon, warp cannon, or warper.
  • Classified as an Eldar vortex weapon.
  • Creates a short-lived warp rift rather than firing a conventional projectile.

Why it’s feared beyond the impact zone

The blast doesn’t just kill what it hits. Reality itself gets distorted, so people and vehicles nearby can be spatially displaced.

Infantry might suddenly find themselves high in the atmosphere, then falling. A tank like a Baneblade could be shunted a few feet into the ground, where molecules can’t occupy the same space and the result is a massive explosion. Some vehicles escape damage but end up flipped upside down, tracks pointing at the sky.

Size, platforms, and limits

Bigger cannons make bigger warp holes, which means more power and a larger chassis to carry them. The largest versions are mounted on Eldar Cobras and Phantom Titans, and even Void Shields offer no protection against them.

A Titan-class Distortion Cannon can swallow several battle tanks in a single shot. When the rift snaps shut, the shockwave can knock over nearby armoured vehicles that were lucky enough to avoid being pulled in.

The trade-off is that, by Eldar standards, the weapon is short-ranged and inaccurate. That unpredictability is baked in, since the thing mocks the laws of physics every time it fires.

CobraLarge cannon, Void Shields don’t help.
Phantom TitanLargest class; can swallow multiple battle tanks per hit.

The Mechanicus learned the hard way

The Adeptus Mechanicus has tried to study and copy this technology. It’s gone badly. In 755299.M40, unsanctioned work triggered the Contagion of Eridanus, and a Grey Knight strike force had to be deployed to stop a Daemonic intrusion.

Since then, strict rules have been imposed to keep the Mechanicus away from heretical Xeno tech. Break those rules and you can expect a visit from the Inquisition.

Key facts

  • The Distortion Cannon is an Eldar vortex weapon also called the D-Cannon, displacer cannon, warp cannon, or warper.
  • It creates a miniature warp hole that can tear targets apart or drag them into the Warp.
  • Nearby units can be spatially displaced, thrown into the sky, or shunted into solid ground.
  • Largest versions mount on Cobras and Phantom Titans; Void Shields don’t stop them.
  • It’s short-ranged and inaccurate by Eldar standards.
  • Mechanicus attempts to replicate it led to the Contagion of Eridanus in 755299.M40.

FAQ

What is the Distortion Cannon in Warhammer 40k?

It’s an Eldar vortex weapon that creates a momentary warp hole in realspace. Targets are torn apart by gravitational forces or pulled into the Warp entirely.

Is the D-Cannon the same as the Distortion Cannon?

Yes. D-Cannon, displacer cannon, warp cannon, and warper are all names for the same weapon.

Can Void Shields stop a Distortion Cannon?

No. Sources are clear that even Void Shields are useless against the largest Distortion Cannons, like those on Cobras and Phantom Titans.
