The Medusa

The Medusa (formally Medusa IV) is the homeworld of the Iron Hands Space Marine Chapter. It’s a grim, unstable Waste World in the Segmentum Obscurus, close enough to the Eye of Terror to shape everything about it.

What kind of world is it?

Medusa is classed as a Waste World, and unofficially as a Death World. It sits in the Sthenelus System, in the Medusan Sub-sector of the Segmentum Obscurus. The sun barely reaches the surface through a dark, polluted sky.

The geology is a mess. Earthquakes, electrical storms and volcanic eruptions constantly tear down and rebuild mountain ranges and seas, so very little can be built in one place for long. Only a handful of calmer regions stay stable, and those are mostly kept for the Iron Hands themselves.

Who lives there?

Medusa’s people are split into nomadic clans who compete hard for resources and safe ground. When a clan moves on, huge caterpillar-like mining haulers carry their possessions and what they’ve dug up.

The population is tiny, around 500,000 by one count, and Medusa pays no Imperial tithe. As a Waste World its post-industrial resource value is effectively nil, so it’s marked Adeptus Non.

Ferrus Manus and the Iron Hands

When Ferrus Manus landed on Medusa, he came to love the world that had hardened him. He famously killed the great metallic wyrm Asirnoth, which had plagued the planet for millennia, and later created the Iron Hands and the sites built to support them.

After rejoining the Emperor, Ferrus was troubled by the weakness he saw in the Imperium, so he deliberately left Medusa’s environment alone. He didn’t conquer it or tame it. That’s why the world still looks much as it always did, apart from the Chapter’s own strongholds.

During the Horus Heresy, Medusa was raided by the Word Bearers and the Dark Mechanicum.

Older history and the Necron question

The Ordo Astra speculates that Medusa was once the site of a battle between the Necrons and their ancient foes, and that a Necron presence might still endure somewhere on the world. It’s a theory, not a confirmed fact.

An old human text called the Legend of Sthenelus described Medusa as rich in rare elements and technological wonders. That’s what drew Rogue Traders and Mechanicum Explorators toward it once the Age of the Imperium began.

Why is Medusa called a Death World?

It’s officially a Waste World, but constant quakes, eruptions and electrical storms make it lethal enough that it’s treated as a Death World in all but name.

Where is Medusa located?

It’s in the Sthenelus System in the Segmentum Obscurus, uncomfortably close to the Eye of Terror.
