The shadow field is a rare piece of Drukhari wargear that wraps its wearer in a shroud of dark energy. It’s the reason an Archon can wade through gunfire untouched, at least until it overloads.
What the shadow field actually does
A shadow field surrounds its user in a dark miasma that soaks up almost all the energy of incoming attacks. Blades, bolts, and blasts mostly just… don’t land. It can also hide the user at will inside that aura of darkness.
Activating one takes serious concentration, and keeping it running takes enormous self-confidence. That’s why you only see them on the most experienced Drukhari, not rank-and-file Kabalite Warriors.
It isn’t invincible
Pile on enough damage and the field overloads, snapping off and leaving the wielder suddenly very exposed. In practice that’s the whole tension of the item: near-total protection, right up until the moment it fails.
Where it came from
The shadow field predates the Fall of the Eldar. Its technology traces back to Aelindrach, a benighted zone of the Webway, where nisariel nightcrystals were harvested. Those crystals are described as shards of universal fundament: incredibly hardy, almost impossible to destroy.
Shortly before the Fall, a cruel Eldar named Drael Malcorvin and his agents, the sendrikhlavh (nightblades), used those crystals to develop shadow field technology. After the Fall it crept into Commorragh, and the Drukhari have used it ever since.
Shadow field vs shadowfield
Don’t mix them up. The personal shadow field is Drukhari wargear. The shadowfield (one word) is a starship-scale shield used on Drukhari and Eldar Corsair vessels, and occasionally by Asuryani, including Craftworld Ulthwé.
Instead of the Imperium’s void shields or standard Eldar energy fields, these ships use form-altering distortion fog to hide their location and movement. Paired with a mimic engine, a shadowfield can even make enemies read the ship as friendly.
