The Eastern Fringe is the far galactic-east, a frontier where the Imperium’s reach fades and alien empires thrive. It’s where the Tau Empire rose, where Hive Fleet Behemoth first struck, and where the Astronomican’s light runs out.
What and where it is
The Eastern Fringe sits at the farthest galactic-east, mostly inside Segmentum Ultima. Beyond a scattering of isolated human settlements, the Imperium barely explores it. The region is home to alien civilisations both primitive and advanced.
The Astronomican only reaches about 50,000 light years, so most of the Fringe lies beyond its light. That makes warp travel there unreliable and slow. Neighbouring Ultima Segmentum forces watch the border for intrusions from the Sautekh Dynasty, the Tau Empire and Tyranid hive fleets.
Who lives there
The Tau Empire is the Fringe’s best-known power, a young xenos empire that’s expanded aggressively since its discovery. The Necron Sautekh Dynasty also holds sway, active across the region from 781.M41. Tyranid hive fleets have made the Fringe a recurring battleground too.
- Tau Empire: expanding xenos empire, first contacted in 789.M35
- Sautekh Dynasty: Necron power active from 781.M41
- Tyranid hive fleets: Behemoth and Kraken both began their invasions here
- Ultramar: the Imperium’s main anchor on the Fringe’s edge
- Saim-Hann: craftworld with interests in the region
Key events
The Fringe has been a flashpoint for millennia. The Thramas Crusade saw the Night Lords and Dark Angels fight over the region’s assets in early M31. Much later, the Adeptus Mechanicus vessel Land’s Vision discovered the Tau in 789.M35, though a violent warp storm cut the planet off.
In 742.M41 the Damocles Gulf Crusade launched after the Tau were rediscovered. Three years later, Hive Fleet Behemoth began its invasion of the galaxy right here, and many worlds fell to the Tyranids and Tau. Hive Fleet Kraken followed in 992.M41, and by 999.M41 the Tau were pushing back into the Fringe with the Prefectia Campaign.

| Grendl Stars | Alien-held region |
| Thramas Sector | Horus Heresy battleground |
| Lithesh Sector | Imperial sector |
