The Deadlands is the ice-covered southern continent of Armageddon, a place so cold it defies explanation and so strategically vital that Ghazghkull Thraka broke with ork tradition just to seize it.
What the Deadlands actually is
It’s a frozen landmass on Armageddon’s southern hemisphere, permanently below zero in a way that nobody’s ever properly explained. The rest of the planet is a industrial hellscape of ash wastes and hive cities. The Deadlands is just ice and snow.
Orks historically wanted nothing to do with it. Too cold, too empty, nothing worth fighting over. That changed when Ghazghkull Thraka looked at a map and saw something nobody else had.
Why it mattered in the Third War for Armageddon
Ghazghkull used the Deadlands as a staging ground for attacks on the hives, especially Helsreach. The Imperium couldn’t ignore that, because the region also controlled fresh water supplies to Armageddon Secundus. Lose the Deadlands, lose the water, lose the war.
The ork commander Gorsnik Magash, the Over-Fiend of Octarius, was put in charge. He had a huge force packed into a small area, mostly earmarked for the submersible gigatankers that would carry orks to Helsreach. He kept them on a short leash, apart from the White Lightning Speed Freeks, who raided everything in sight without achieving much.
The White Scars’ campaign
The Tulwar Brotherhood, led by Suboden Khan, was badly outnumbered. So Suboden did what White Scars do: he ran, and made the orks chase him.
For four weeks the orks pursued the White Scars across the continent. The White Scars vanished into the interior, leaving their pursuers searching for five days. That bought time to cripple several submersible shipyards, wrecking vessels and stopping reinforcements from reaching Helsreach.
When the White Lightning Speed Freeks finally returned, they found a demoralised ork force with no clear leader, and immediately started brawling among themselves. Suboden had technicians at Zebra Ice Station rig bombs onto Attack Bike sidecars, which were driven into the giant Roks and detonated. The White Lightnings put up some resistance, but it collapsed once Suboden personally hit the Bosswagon with Melta Bombs.
The outcome
Three days before Ghazghkull was said to have left the planet, the Deadlands were reported as securely under Imperial control. The Tulwar Brotherhood earned a new battle honour for their part in it.
The Imperium held most of the key structures, largely thanks to the White Scars. Ork control of the submersible shipyards was reduced to roughly a third.
| Key feature | Orks | Imperium | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ork submersible shipyard | 33% | 67% | Imperial victory |
