The Iron Hands’ Home World Medusa

Medusa, officially Medusa IV, is the home world of the Iron Hands Space Marine Chapter. It’s a brutal Waste World where nomadic clans fight for survival, and it shaped both the Chapter and its primarch, Ferrus Manus.

What kind of world is Medusa?

Medusa sits in the Sthenelus System, in the Medusan Sub-sector of Segmentum Obscurus, uncomfortably close to the Eye of Terror. It’s classed as a Waste World and unofficially as a Death World, with a tithe grade of Adeptus Non. The population is tiny, roughly 500,000 people.

The planet is a place of endless gloom. Its sun rarely breaks through the polluted sky, and the ground itself is unstable: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and electrical storms constantly reshape the landscape, tearing down mountains and raising new ones. There’s very little solid ground you can build on for long, which is why the clans stay mobile.

Who lives there, and how?

Medusa’s people live in nomadic clans that compete hard for resources and safe ground. When a clan moves on, it hauls its possessions in great caterpillar-like mining vehicles. The few stable regions are mostly kept for the Iron Hands themselves.

That harshness is the point. The Medusan character is tough, self-reliant and unsentimental, and the Iron Hands recruit from that stock. Their dislike of weakness isn’t just a doctrine, it’s a reflection of the world that raised them.

Ferrus Manus and Medusa’s history

Ferrus Manus, primarch of the Iron Hands, grew up on Medusa and came to love it for the way it tested him. He’s most famous there for killing Asirnoth, a great metallic wyrm that had plagued the world for millennia.

After reuniting with the Emperor, Ferrus deliberately left Medusa unconquered and unchanged. He saw weakness in the Imperium and didn’t want to soften his home world. So Medusa stayed as it was, apart from the Iron Hands’ own strongholds. During the Horus Heresy, the world was raided by the Word Bearers and the Dark Mechanicum.

There’s older speculation too. The Ordo Astra suspects Medusa was once a battleground between the Necrons and their ancient enemies, and that a Necron presence might still linger somewhere beneath the surface.

Medusa’s role in the wider setting

For the Iron Hands, Medusa isn’t just a base. It’s the reason they are the way they are: cold, pragmatic, obsessed with strength and suspicious of weakness in flesh. The planet’s proximity to the Eye of Terror also makes it a strategically grim posting.

Ancient human records, including the Legend of Sthenelus, described Medusa as rich in rare elements and technological wonders, which drew Rogue Traders and Mechanicum Explorators once the Age of the Imperium began. That reputation still colours how outsiders see the world, even if day-to-day life there is a grind.
