The Craftworlds

The Craftworlds are enormous Aeldari world-ships that carry the Asuryani, the largest surviving branch of the Eldar race, through the void after the Fall of their empire. They’re more than ships. They’re self-sufficient realms, each with its own culture, government, and army, and they’re one of the most important xenos factions in the 41st millennium.

What a craftworld actually is

Each craftworld started life as a trading vessel during the old Eldar Empire. They were built in colossal star docks by Bonesingers and spent centuries crossing the galaxy, sometimes dipping into the Webway. When they came home, their crews often found the empire slipping further into decadence.

After the Fall, those ships opened their doors to any Eldar sane enough to flee. The ones that escaped Slaanesh’s birth kept running. Over millennia the hulls have grown ten or a hundred times larger than the original trading cores, so most craftworlds are now continent-sized, partly ruined, and home to tens of millions.

  • Self-sufficient: they grow food, generate power, and defend themselves without outside help.
  • Living ships: powered by an Infinity Circuit that responds to the psychic energy of the Eldar aboard.
  • Propelled by huge solar sails that drink energy from nearby stars.
  • Interiors sit partly in a fourth spatial dimension, so every level has something beneath it, even the spires.

Life inside

Craftworlds are designed to keep their people alive and sane. Each one has an artificial sun and carefully managed biomes, forests, lakes, beaches, and wildlife that act as green lungs for the breathable atmosphere.

There are also concert halls, recreation districts, and vast space docks that launch fleets into the Webway. The whole place is beautiful by design. After the Fall, beauty isn’t a luxury, it’s part of how the Asuryani keep Slaanesh at bay.

Why they matter

The Craftworlds are the main political and military power of the Aeldari. They field Aspect Warriors, Warlocks, Farseers, and fleets that can appear anywhere the Webway reaches. When a craftworld goes to war, it can reshape a campaign.

They’re also a warning. Every craftworld is a refugee ship running from a disaster it can never fully escape. Their Farseers spend centuries trying to steer fate away from extinction, and they don’t always care who gets hurt along the way.

Famous craftworlds

A handful of craftworlds show up again and again in the lore. The big five are the ones most players know: Ulthwé, Saim-Hann, Alaitoc, Biel-Tan, and Iyanden. Each has its own flavour, from Ulthwé’s gloomy seers to Saim-Hann’s wild rider clans.

CraftworldWhat it’s known for
UlthwéSeer-heavy, doom-laden, guided by its Council of Farseers.
Saim-HannFast, tribal, and fond of jetbikes and Wild Rider clans.
AlaitocStrict, Ranger-heavy, obsessed with purity and tradition.
Biel-TanMilitant, wants to rebuild the Eldar empire by force.
IyandenNearly destroyed by Hive Fleet Kraken, now relies on Wraithconstructs.

How they connect to the wider lore

Craftworlds aren’t the only Aeldari left. The Drukhari live in Commorragh, the Harlequins serve Cegorach, and the Ynnari follow Ynnead. The Asuryani sit somewhere in the middle, trying to survive without falling into any of those paths.

They also bump into everyone else. They’ve fought the Imperium since the Great Crusade, lost craftworlds to Hive Fleets, and had others destroyed by Chaos. The list of dead craftworlds is long, which tells you how precarious their existence really is.
