The Deff Dread is a hulking Ork walker, a clanking metal can stuffed with guns, blades, and one very unlucky Ork who’s been hard-wired into it for life. It’s one of the loudest, stompiest things in Ork warfare, and it matters because a single one can turn a scrap into a massacre.
What the deff dread actually is
A Deff Dread is a large Ork walker, roughly four tons of armour, engine, and weaponry, trundling along at about 10kph whether it’s on a road or not. Orks also call them Death Dreadnoughts, which tells you how they see them: the Ork answer to a Space Marine Dreadnought.
The comparison goes further than looks. Like a Marine Dreadnought, a Deff Dread needs a pilot wired permanently into the machine. Unlike a Marine, the Ork who climbs in volunteered, and he’s not coming back out.
Building one takes two specialists. A Mekboy handles the machine, a Painboy handles the surgery, and between them they turn a living Ork into part of the walker.
The pilot’s bargain
Installation means tubes, nerve probes, cranial jacks, and stranger bits of machinery driven into the Ork’s brain and spine. It’s painful, it’s disorienting, and he trades away most of his natural Orkiness for raw killing power.
After that he spends the rest of his days in a cramped, deafening, sweltering metal box with a thin slit to see through. Most pilots regret it fast. Over time they go a bit mad, a state other Orks call ‘runnin’ in’.
The upside is that the machine moves like his own body. He feels every swing and every shot, which is exactly what he signed up for. In battle that fury goes into the enemy. Off it, a runnin’ in pilot sometimes kills whatever’s nearest.
Weapons and how they’re used
A typical Deff Dread carries two huge pincers or saws for close work plus two heavy guns. The gun choice is usually big shootas, rokkit launchas, skorchas, or Kustom Mega-Blastas.
Beyond the basic frame, no two are alike. Mekboys decorate, arm, and configure them however they fancy, so the walkers end up as individual as the Meks who built them.
On the field they’re support units and mobile weapons platforms. They fight alongside Ork mobs or back up a Warboss and his Nobz. One Deff Dread can tip an otherwise brutal fight in the Orks’ favour, which is why they’re expensive and used sparingly by the Warbosses who can afford them. The pilots hate the quiet stretches, since the only relief from being welded inside comes from slaughter.
Big Mek Dreads and Killa Kans
Big Mek Dreads are a variant piloted by Big Meks, and they lead Killa Kans and Deff Dreads into battle. The key difference is that a Big Mek isn’t permanently installed and can climb out through a top hatch.
Sources say Big Mek Dreads are exclusive to the Bad Moons, the only clan with enough teef to buy something that flash. They often carry kustom-built weaponry such as a Shokk Atta

- Standard armament is two huge pincers or saws plus two heavy guns, often big shootas, rokkit launchas, skorchas, or Kustom Mega-Blastas.
- They serve as support units and mobile weapons platforms alongside Ork mobs or a Warboss and his Nobz.
- They’re expensive enough that Warbosses deploy them sparingly.
- Big Mek Dreads lead Killa Kans and Deff Dreads, and their pilots can climb out through a top hatch.
FAQ
Is a Deff Dread the same as a Space Marine Dreadnought?
Not really, though Orks built them along similar lines. Both need a pilot permanently wired in, but a Deff Dread’s pilot is an Ork volunteer, and the machine is far more ramshackle and individually customised.
Who can pilot a Deff Dread?
An Ork volunteer, hard-wired into the walker for life. Big Mek Dreads are the exception, since a Big Mek stays mobile and can leave through the top hatch.
What does ‘runnin’ in’ mean?
It’s Ork slang for a Deff Dread pilot losing his mind after years welded inside. Runnin’ in pilots are unpredictable and dangerous, though in battle that rage gets pointed at the enemy.
