Big Meks

Big Meks are the senior Ork Mekboyz, the mechanics and engineers who build the war machines a Waaagh! needs and often lead the charge themselves. If an Ork army has a Gargant stomping across the battlefield, there’s a Big Mek somewhere behind it. Without them, a Waaagh! grinds to a halt: no working vehicles, no guns, no spacecraft.

What a Big Mek actually is

Every Ork clan has Mekboyz: Oddboyz born with a natural feel for machinery. They don’t study engineering, they just know it. A Big Mek is the biggest, most experienced Mekboy around, which in Ork society means he’s also in charge. He’s one of these Meks who’s climbed the ladder, usually through size, success, and a knack for building the biggest, loudest things in the camp.

They’re more than repairmen. Big Meks are warlords in their own right, and a Waaagh! led by one tends to be even louder and more heavily armed than usual. They’re still Meks at heart, so you’ll find them in the workshop as often as the battlefield. But when a Big Mek fights, they bring custom gear that’s crude, exotic, and often dangerously unstable.

  • Senior Mekboyz, so they outrank ordinary Mekboyz
  • Build and maintain the Waaagh!’s vehicles, walkers, and heavy weapons
  • Often lead their own warbands or sub-factions
  • Prized for their ability to keep war machines running mid-battle

How they fit into a Waaagh!

Orks follow whoever’s biggest and strongest, and a Big Mek earns respect by making things that work. A Warboss might lead the horde, but he relies on his Big Meks to keep the trakks rolling and the guns firing. Without Meks, Battlewagons fall apart, guns stop firing, and a Waaagh! loses its momentum.

They’re also tied to the psychic phenomenon Orks call the Waa-Ork. When enough greenskins believe in a big fight, the psychic energy flows through the building of war machines. Meks are right at the centre of that, which gives them a spiritual weight in Ork society beyond just being handy with a spanner. This isn’t a psyker discipline, just a cultural and psychic effect.

In game terms, Big Meks are support characters who buff nearby vehicles and infantry while still hitting hard in combat. They’re a natural pick when you want a mechanical theme running through your army.

  • Sit near the top of the chain that keeps a warband running
  • Can be taken as warlords, though they usually defer to a Warboss when one is around
  • Their authority comes from being indispensable

What they build and how Ork tech works

Big Meks are behind the Orks’ biggest hardware: Gargants, Stompas, Deff Dreads, and all manner of kustom guns and wagons. Ork technology looks like junk because it mostly is junk. Meks weld, rivet, and hammer scrap together until it resembles a gun or a bionic leg. The result shouldn’t work, and yet it does, often as deadly as anything the T’au or Eldar field.

The reason is partly instinct and partly the Waaagh! field: Orks believe their gear works, and that belief helps it work. It’s a ramshackle, exploratory way of building, and Meks wouldn’t have it any other way. Under a Big Mek’s hands, it works at least well enough to point at the enemy.

  • Skill is instinctive, not learned
  • Tech looks like scrap held together by belief and stubbornness

Big Mek wargear and variants

Big Meks carry a mix of Mek tools and battlefield weapons. Common picks include a Kustom Mega-Blasta, a Tellyport Blasta, or a Shokk Attack Gun, plus Mek’s Tools for repairs. They often wear Mega Armour or ride a Warbike to keep up with the fight. The Shokk Attack Gun fires terrified Snotlings through the warp at the target, and it’s as dangerous to the user as it is to whatever’s on the receiving end.

The Mek hierarchy runs wider than just Big Meks. Below them are Spanna Boyz, the apprentices who lead Lootas and Burna Boyz mobs. Above them are Mek-Bosses, who command entire Mek shops and can rival a Warboss in influence. Rare Mek Musicians build and play instruments.

Clan and colour

A Big Mek’s clan shapes his style. Bad Moons Big Meks flash their wealth with teef and fancy gear. Death Skulls loot everything they can carry. Evil Sunz build fast, loud machines. Goffs keep it brutal, Blood Axes get suspiciously tactical, and Snakebites mostly ignore the whole business in favour of squigs.

That flexibility is why Big Meks show up across nearly every Ork army list. You can build around them or just slot one in for the buffs and the big gun.

FAQ

Are Big Meks the same as Mekboyz?

No. Mekboyz are the general Ork mechanic caste, and a Big Mek is a senior, more powerful Mekboy who’s risen to a leadership role. Think of a Big Mek as a Mekboy who got big enough to boss the others around.

Can a Big Mek lead an Ork army?

Yes. Big Meks can be taken as warlords and often lead mechanised or walker-heavy forces. They’re a popular alternative to a standard Warboss when you want a techy theme, though they usually defer to a Warboss when one is around.

What’s the Shokk Attack Gun?

It’s a signature Big Mek weapon that teleports Snotlings through the warp and fires them at the enemy. It’s wildly unpredictable and just as likely to misfire on the Ork holding it.

Do Big Meks use psychic powers?

Not in the psyker sense. Their connection to the Waa-Ork is a cultural and psychic phenomenon, not a tabletop psychic discipline.
