The Doom Scythe

The Doom Scythe is the Necrons’ supersonic fighter aircraft, and it’s usually the first thing an invaded world hears before everything goes wrong. It hits harder than a fighter has any right to, and it’s built to terrify as much as to kill.

What the doom scythe actually is

It’s a Necron fighter that flies at supersonic speed, at least three times the speed of sound, and it’s meant to operate far more independently than most Necron war machines. Instead of a pilot wired into a command network, each one carries an advanced android brain that can run through billions of tactical options in nanoseconds.

That onboard intelligence is backed by banks of datastacks holding strike plans, stratagems and tactical variants. The result is a dogfighter that thinks for itself, which is unusual for the Necrons and makes it genuinely dangerous in a scrap.

How it flies and what it carries

The airframe runs on an uprated version of the repulsor drive used by Tomb Blades, which gives it speed and agility in equal measure. Even though the cockpit is sealed around a mechanical pilot, the craft still carries energy shielding.

For weapons, it mounts twin-linked Tesla Destructors and the Death Ray, a weapon nasty enough that a single Doom Scythe can wipe out an armoured column. It can also drop payloads of pulsing green bombs.

  • Speed: three times the speed of sound or better
  • Drive: augmented Tomb Blade repulsor system
  • Defence: energy shielding over an enclosed cockpit
  • Guns: twin-linked Tesla Destructors and a Death Ray
  • Extras: green bomb payloads

Why the doom scythe matters

Doom Scythes typically form the first wave of a Necron invasion, and they’re built to break morale before the ground fight even starts. The whine of the repulsor drive gets deliberately amplified, and its resonance frequency is tuned to wreck organic brains, leaving anyone who hears it catatonic or insane.

If that doesn’t make a world surrender, the guns will. A full squadron is said to be able to reduce a hive city to slag in under an hour, which puts the Doom Scythe somewhere between a terror weapon and a strategic bomber.

Lordsblades and the Night Scythe

Doom Scythes that prove especially effective get promoted, in a sense. They’re elevated to serve a Necron Overlord directly, and those aircraft are known as Lordsblades. The same honour applies to Night Scythes, the transport variant of the same airframe.

Named Lordsblades in the lore include Ancient Majesty and Entropy’s Demise of the Sautekh Dynasty, Immeasurable Supremacy of the Mephrit, Killing Star and Voidborne of the Novokh, Sandwraith of the Sautekh, and Destined for Supremacy of the Nihilakh.

Key facts

  • The Doom Scythe is a Necron supersonic fighter, usually the first wave of an invasion.
  • Its android pilot brain can simulate billions of strategies in nanoseconds, making it unusually independent.
  • Standard armament is twin-linked Tesla Destructors and a Death Ray, plus optional green bombs.
  • Its amplified drive whine is designed to drive organic listeners insane.
  • A full squadron can supposedly reduce a hive city to slag in under an hour.
  • Exceptional Doom Scythes are promoted to Lordsblades and serve an Overlord directly.

FAQ

What is the difference between a Doom Scythe and a Night Scythe?

They share the same airframe. The Night Scythe is the transport version, while the Doom Scythe is the gunship, armed with Tesla Destructors and a Death Ray. Both can be elevated to Lordsblade status.

How fast is a Doom Scythe?

Sources put it at three times the speed of sound at minimum, driven by an augmented repulsor engine.

Why does the Doom Scythe drive people insane?

Its repulsor drive whine is intentionally amplified, and the resonance frequency is tuned to affect living brains, leaving organic listeners catatonic or unhinged.
