The Weirdboy

The Weirdboy is an Ork psyker who acts as a living battery for the Waaagh!, soaking up the psychic energy other Orks give off and blasting it back out. He’s as dangerous to his own side as he is to the enemy, and that’s exactly why Orks love him.

What a weirdboy actually is

Every Ork is a little bit psychic, but only a few develop the gift fully. Those are the Weirdboyz. They can’t choose when to absorb the Waaagh! energy boiling off the Orks around them, and they can’t choose how it comes out either, just that it does.

The discharge tends to be spectacular: green lightning, waves of glowing vomit, or a blast that fries whole squads of enemies at once. The Weirdboy feels much better afterwards. Everyone nearby usually doesn’t.

The ‘eadbang problem

If a Weirdboy can’t vent the energy fast enough, it builds up until his head explodes. That’s an ‘Eadbang, and it’s where the nickname ‘Eadbanger comes from. The overspill can be so violent that nearby Orks lose their heads too.

It’s a constant risk. A Weirdboy surrounded by excited, chanting Orks is basically a bomb with legs, and everyone knows it.

  • Energy builds up involuntarily from nearby Orks
  • Discharge comes out as a fixed effect, not a choice
  • Failure means a literal exploding head, sometimes several

How Orks handle them

Orks keep Weirdboyz at arm’s length. They live in raised ‘Weirdhouses’ on copper stilts that earth excess power into the ground, and they’re never allowed to wander camp without a couple of guards, the Minderz.

The gaudy clothes, big hats, bells and rattles aren’t decoration. They make a Weirdboy easy to spot and easy to hear, because a psychic conduit under pressure has a habit of trying to slip away right when he’s needed.

In battle

Minderz drag Weirdboyz to the front whether they like it or not, then snatch away their copper staffs and physically aim them at the enemy when the sparks start. It works, roughly. The results can devastate the enemy, or the Orks, or both.

Other Orks find the whole thing hilarious. They’ll follow a Weirdboy into a fight just to see what happens, which tells you plenty about Ork priorities.

Warpheads and Wurrboyz

A Warphead is a Weirdboy who’s been around long enough, or soaked up enough power, to get stronger and more unstable. Wurrboyz are a related breed of Ork psyker, and they show up in Ork lore alongside the classic Weirdboyz.

The core idea stays the same: an Ork who channels the Waaagh! is a weapon nobody fully controls, including the weapon.

Key facts

  • An ‘Eadbang is a fatal psychic overload that explodes the Weirdboy’s head
  • They live apart from other Orks in copper-stilted ‘Weirdhouses’ for everyone’s safety
  • Minderz guard them and drag them into battle as living weapons
  • Warpheads are stronger, less stable Weirdboyz; Wurrboyz are a related Ork psyker type

FAQ

What is a Weirdboy in Warhammer 40k?

It’s an Ork psyker who absorbs the psychic energy given off by other Orks and discharges it as raw psychic attacks. He has no control over the absorption or the form it takes.

What is an ‘Eadbang?

It’s what happens when a Weirdboy can’t release built-up psychic energy in time. His head explodes, and the backlash can blow up the heads of nearby Orks too.

What are Minderz?

They’re the Ork guards assigned to watch a Weirdboy. They keep him from running off, escort him around camp, and drag him onto the battlefield to be used as a living weapon.

What’s the difference between a Weirdboy and a Warphead?

A Warphead is a more powerful, more unstable version of a Weirdboy. Same job, more power, more risk of things going wrong.
