Weirdboyz are the ork psykers, the only greenskins whose latent psychic potential actually develops. They don’t cast spells so much as act as living batteries for the Waaagh!, soaking up the psychic energy every ork gives off and discharging it before their head bursts.
What a weirdboy actually does
Every ork is psychic on some level. The difference is that a weirdboy soaks up that background energy instead of just generating it. He can’t switch the absorption on or off, and he can’t shape it into careful spells either. All he does is hold it and then let it out.
When it comes out, it comes out ugly. A weirdboy vents power as a raw blast, sometimes described as vomiting fire or a wave of force erupting from his mouth. It tends to fry whole handfuls of enemies at once, which is exactly why the orks keep dragging him to the front.
Why they live apart from the camp
Being near other orks is genuinely dangerous for a weirdboy. Their unconscious psychic noise builds up inside him, and if he can’t discharge it in time, it kills him. The orks call the result an ‘Eadbang: his head literally explodes, and the overspill can pop the heads of nearby orks too. That’s where the nickname ‘Eadbanger comes from.
So weirdboyz are kept at arm’s length. They live in raised ‘weirdhouses’ on copper stilts, which earth the excess power into the ground the way a wire carries electricity. The houses are guarded, and a weirdboy doesn’t walk through the settlement without a couple of guards, known as Minderz, keeping an eye on him.
- Copper staffs and stilts act as grounding rods for built-up psychic energy
- Gaudy clothes and big hats mark them out so other orks can keep clear
- Bells and rattles get sewn into the outfit so a sneaking weirdboy can’t slip away unnoticed
Weirdboyz in battle
Combat is a nightmare for a weirdboy. Surrounded by chanting, stomping, excited orks, he fills up with power fast, and it hurts. The Minderz deal with this by hauling him toward the enemy, waiting for the sparks to show in his eyes, then snatching away his copper stick and physically aiming him at whatever needs killing.
It works, but it’s not precise. A discharge can devastate the enemy, and it can just as easily go wrong for the orks standing next to him.
Variants
Not every weirdboy is the same kind of psychic sponge. Two variants show up repeatedly in the lore.
| Variant | What’s different |
|---|---|
| Warphead | A weirdboy who’s absorbed far more Waaagh! energy than usual, making him considerably more powerful and considerably less stable |
| Wurrboyz | Weirdboyz who lean into aggressive, destructive psychic displays rather than the standard blast-and-vomit routine |
Key facts

- An ‘Eadbang is a fatal overload where the weirdboy’s head explodes
- They live in copper-stilted weirdhouses away from the main camp
- Minderz guard them and aim them at the enemy in battle
- Warpheads and Wurrboyz are the main known variants
FAQ
What is a weirdboy in Warhammer 40k?
A weirdboy is an ork psyker. He absorbs the psychic energy other orks give off and discharges it as raw psychic force. He has no real control over the absorption, only over when he lets it go.
What happens if a weirdboy can’t discharge his power?
He suffers an ‘Eadbang. His head explodes, and the psychic backlash can kill nearby orks the same way. It’s why they’re also called ‘Eadbangers.
Why do weirdboyz wear bright clothes and bells?
So other orks can see and hear them coming and stay clear. The noise also stops a weirdboy from quietly running off when he’s needed, which the lore says they’re often tempted to do.
