The Phalanx

The Phalanx is the mobile fortress-monastery of the Imperial Fists, a starship so vast it was built to house an entire Legion. It’s served as the chapter’s true home for ten thousand years, and it’s one of the biggest and most important vessels in the Imperium.

What the Phalanx actually is

Officially the Imperial Fists are based on Terra, but in practice they’ve always been fleet-based, and the Phalanx is where they operate from. It’s a mobile fortress-monastery rather than a conventional warship, which means it carries the chapter’s armoury, training halls, and command staff with it wherever it goes.

It was built to sustain a Legion, so it’s absurdly oversized for a single Chapter. Most of its docking bays sit empty, and the Imperium can’t replicate the tech that went into it, so even small damage causes real problems.

The Phalanx in the Horus Heresy

During much of the Heresy, the Phalanx hung in orbit over Terra and served as Rogal Dorn’s command base. As Horus closed in, Dorn moved his headquarters to the Bhab Bastion in the Imperial Palace, but he still planned to use the Phalanx to smash the traitor fleet gathering around Luna and Mars.

That plan went sideways. A daemon called Samus got loose aboard the ship, and Dorn came close to scuttling the Phalanx before the daemon was banished. Damaged and surrounded, the ship was sent out to the edges of the Sol System under Admiral Niora Su-Kassen to raid traitor supply lines.

Later, during the Siege of Terra, the Phalanx hid among Saturn’s rings and joined a loyalist refugee fleet. When the Astronomican was relit, Su-Kassen took it as a signal and led a counterattack on the traitor fleet just hours before Guilliman arrived. By the end of the siege the ship was described as a half ruin.

After the Heresy

By M32 the Phalanx was already decaying. With too few crew to fill it and no way to replace its ancient systems, the Imperium kept it out of harm’s way. During the War of the Beast it was parked between Terra and Venus rather than risk it against Ork Attack Moons.

In 999.M41, during the 13th Black Crusade, the 3rd Company defended the Phalanx from a daemonic boarding action led by the Iron Warriors Warsmith Shon’tu and the daemon Be’lakor. It’s one of the clearest examples of the ship being treated as a target in its own right.

Layout and notable locations

The interior is huge enough that fans have built whole dioramas of single hangar bays. Key areas include the strategium, vehicle bays, gunship hangars, and drop pod launch bays, all connected by the ship’s sprawling decks.

  • Strategium: the command hub, with a distinctive large window shown in official art.
  • Vehicle bays: where armour like Vindicators gets loaded and maintained by Techmarines.
  • Gunship hangar: launching craft such as the Stormhawk Interceptor.
  • Drop pod launch bay: the deployment point for the chapter’s orbital strikes.

FAQ

Is the Phalanx a ship or a fortress?

It’s both. It’s a starship, but it functions as the Imperial Fists’ fortress-monastery and primary base of operations.

Who owns the Phalanx?

The Imperial Fists chapter. It was built for a Legion, so it’s far bigger than a single Chapter would normally need.

What happened to the Phalanx during the Horus Heresy?

It served as Dorn’s command base over Terra, survived a daemonic boarding, and later helped lead a counterattack during the Siege of Terra. It ended the siege badly damaged.
