The Third War for Armageddon was the largest Ork invasion the Imperium had faced in centuries. Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka came back for revenge, and the planet never really recovered.
What started it
The war kicked off in 998.M41, exactly fifty-seven years after the Second War for Armageddon. Ghazghkull Thraka had spent that time rebuilding, and he wasn’t discouraged by his earlier defeat. He’d treated that first war as a lesson in how the Imperium fights.
Commissar Sebastian Yarrick was waiting for him again. Ghazghkull had actually let Yarrick go after capturing him at the Battle of Golgotha, because a rematch with his favourite enemy sounded like more fun.
The scale of the fighting
This wasn’t a small scrap. Around 1.5 million Guardsmen and roughly 50,000 Space Marines were deployed across the Armageddon Subsector. Dozens of Chapters sent forces, from the Black Templars and Salamanders to the Space Wolves and Blood Angels.
The Steel Legion fielded twenty-five regiments, backed by over a hundred hive militia regiments and the Ash Waste Militia. The Black Templars alone brought three Crusades, including the Helsreach Crusade under Reclusiarch Grimaldus.
| Faction | Key commanders |
|---|---|
| Orks | Ghazghkull Thraka, various warbosses |
| Imperium | Yarrick, Helbrecht, Grimaldus, Grimnar, Tu’Shan |
| Chaos | Angron (later), Hrothqar Furor |
How it ended (and why it didn’t)
There was no clean victory. Ghazghkull eventually left Armageddon to launch his Great Waaagh!, which led straight into the Fourth War for Armageddon. Herman von Strab, the planet’s disgraced former overlord, was assassinated by the 13th Penal Legion.
The formation of the Great Rift made everything worse. Half the planet became a Daemon World, and daemons started pouring through the Red Angel’s Gate. Angron himself returned, though he was banished and the gate sealed.
Why it matters
The Third War for Armageddon is a turning point for the whole sector. It showed that Ghazghkull wasn’t just another warboss, he was a strategic threat who could learn and adapt. It also left Armageddon permanently scarred, half daemon-infested and still bleeding.
For fans of the lore, it’s the backdrop for Helsreach and the rivalry between Ghazghkull and Yarrick. It connects directly to the War of the Beast’s aftermath, the Great Rift, and the ongoing Ork threat in the Segmentum Solar.
