The Vostroyan Forge World

Vostroya is a bleak industrial world in Segmentum Obscurus, famous for its Vostroyan Firstborn regiments. It’s often called a forge world, but that’s not quite right, and the difference matters.

What Vostroya actually is

Vostroya sits in Segmentum Obscurus, beyond the Eye of Terror. It’s classed as an Industrial World, not a forge world and not a hive world. It falls somewhere in between.

Its tithe grade is Exactis Extremis, the highest tier, and around 9.3 billion people live there. Birth and death rates are both very high, which keeps the population roughly stable despite huge numbers leaving for war.

The world runs on manufactoria that churn out arms and ammunition for the Imperium. It’s been doing that since the Great Crusade, ten thousand years of production lines and quotas.

Why it matters: the Firstborn debt

During the Horus Heresy, Vostroya refused to send regiments to the Emperor. Instead, it kept its people on the factory floor. After the Heresy ended, the world agreed to a penance: every first-born son would serve in the Imperial Guard. That’s where the Vostroyan Firstborn come from.

The tradition still holds. First-born sons from every family, noble or common, are pledged to the Astra Militarum. Their equipment is ornate and often passed down to new recruits, so the regiments carry a visible legacy of fine weapons and wargear.

The Vostroyan Firstborn first appeared as a regiment in 2006, tied to the Fall of Medusa V campaign. Their classic miniatures have since returned as a Made to Order release, and they can stand in for Cadian Shock Troops or Heavy Weapons Squads in games.

Government and culture

Vostroya is ruled by the Techtriarchs, a council mixing Adeptus Mechanicus members with more traditional planetary representatives. That hybrid setup fits a world that’s industrial but not a formal forge world.

Vostroyan males generally sport moustaches, and the culture is proud and fierce. Life is harsh: the landscape is polluted, plant and animal life is almost gone, and most food is imported. Rebreathers and masks are common against the cold winds and tainted air.

There are seven administrative zones around the temperate equatorial belt, including The Magdan, Sohlsvod and Muskha. The far north and south are uninhabitable. Vostroya has one moon, Turtolsky.

The world has seen at least eighteen ‘Great Wars’. In the ruins left behind, a substantial mutant population lurks, hunted by bounty hunters or killed in PDF operations.

Notable locations and wildlife

Key hives include Hive Ahropol, Hive Decius, and Hive Tzurka. Outside the managed zones, almost nothing lives. Birds are a rare sight.

Chemdogs, descended from canids brought by early settlers, are one of the few animals you’ll find. Hive vermin like lungspiders and rats are more common.

  • Hive Ahropol, Hive Decius, Hive Tzurka: major hive cities.
  • Turtolsky: Vostroya’s single moon.
  • Chemdog: canid descendant of settler dogs.
  • Lungspider and rat: hive vermin.
