The War of the Beast

The War of the Beast was the biggest Ork Waaagh! the galaxy has ever seen, and it nearly finished off the Imperium just a thousand years after the Horus Heresy. It’s the reason the Deathwatch exists, and it’s one of the most important wars you’ve probably never read about.

What was the War of the Beast?

In 544.M32, a Warboss known only as The Beast united most of the Ork race into a single Waaagh! that rampaged across the Imperium. It dwarfed even the Ullanor Crusade that made Horus Warmaster, and it was the largest war humanity had fought since the Heresy.

The Imperium had grown complacent. Peace and prosperity had returned, the Traitor Legions were licking their wounds in the Eye of Terror, and the Orks were written off as a beaten threat. That underestimation cost billions of lives.

How the war unfolded

The Beast’s forces struck hard and fast, and the Imperium lost world after world. The Adeptus Astartes were hit especially hard, with entire Chapters wiped out or reduced to a handful of survivors.

The war reached Terra itself. Ork forces invaded the Sol System, and only desperate measures and a lot of luck stopped them. The Mechanicum nearly tore itself apart over how to respond, and the Imperium’s leadership was in chaos.

Vulkan, one of the few surviving Primarchs, returned to lead the counterattack. He spearheaded a strike on Ullanor, the Ork homeworld, and ultimately gave his life (or vanished, depending on the account) to end the threat. The war ended in 546.M32 with an Imperial victory, but it was pyrrhic at best.

Why the war matters

The War of the Beast shattered the idea that the Imperium had seen the worst it could face. It forced a hard reset on how humanity viewed xenos threats, especially Orks.

It also led directly to the founding of the Deathwatch. The Inquisition realised they needed a dedicated force to hunt alien threats before they could grow into another Beast-level crisis.

The war exposed how fragile the Imperium’s leadership had become. The High Lords, the Mechanicum, and the Astartes all struggled to coordinate, and that dysfunction would echo down the millennia.

  • Largest Ork Waaagh! in recorded history
  • Nearly destroyed Terra and the Imperium
  • Devastated the Adeptus Astartes
  • Led to the creation of the Deathwatch
  • Saw the return and loss of Primarch Vulkan

Key figures and forces

The Beast itself was a massive Ork Warboss, far larger and smarter than typical greenskins. It commanded a Waaagh! that included millions of ships and billions of Orks.

On the Imperial side, Lord Commander Koorland (a Imperial Fist) led much of the early resistance before being killed. Chapter Master Maximus Thane, Lord High Admiral Lansung, and Grand Master Drakan Vangorich were also central. Vulkan’s return was the turning point.

Aftermath and legacy

The Imperium survived, but the cost was staggering. Billions were dead, entire star systems were ruined, and the Astartes were a shadow of their former strength.

The war also left deep scars in the Imperium’s psyche. It proved that Orks could be an existential threat if left unchecked, and it set the stage for the Imperium’s later stagnation and decay.

In the wider lore, the War of the Beast is a reminder that the Imperium’s golden age after the Heresy was fragile, and that its enemies are always waiting for a moment of weakness.
