An Ork Waaagh! is three or four things at once, and Orks don’t bother separating them. It’s the psychic noise a crowd of greenskins makes, the galaxy-spanning invasion that noise fuels, the horde itself, and the shout they all bellow while doing it.
What the word covers
Ork sources use Waaagh! for four linked ideas: a psychic field, a mass invasion, a gathered horde, and a battle cry. They bleed into each other because in Ork life they usually happen together.
The simplest way to hold it in your head: enough Orks in one place make a Waaagh!, and a big enough Waaagh! pulls in more Orks.
- Waaagh! energy: the psychic field a gathering of Orks generates.
- Waaagh! as an event: the invasion itself, a migration, holy war, looting spree and pub crawl rolled into one.
- Waaagh! as a group: the horde united under a single Warboss, often named after him.
- Waaagh!: the warcry, which is exactly what it sounds like.
The psychic field
Put enough Orks together and they generate a psychic field, usually called Waaagh! energy. It does something very practical: it lets Orks instinctively sense who’s ‘bigga’, and therefore who’s in charge. Rank in Ork society is partly a psychic fact.
Weirdboyz are the Orks who can actually channel this energy, turning it into a range of nasty psychic powers. The field also seems to touch Ork technology. During the War of the Beast, Adeptus Mechanicus observers noticed Ork weapons only seemed to work when a greenskin was touching them.
The invasion and the horde
The event is the rare moment Orks stop fighting each other and pour outward at everyone else. Millions of battle-hungry greenskins hit a target and flatten whatever’s in the way. Who gets invaded barely matters to them. Battle is battle.
A Waaagh! grows as long as it’s winning. Word of a good fight travels, more Orks show up, and the thing snowballs. That’s why an early Waaagh! is a problem and a late one is a catastrophe.
The horde is what you get when one Warboss, always the biggest and most intimidating Ork around, welds rival warbands into a single mob. Waaaghs! are usually named after that Warboss. The Beast’s Waaagh! was so strong it made his Orks grow bigger and angrier than normal, and even an ordinary Boy in that horde dwarfed a regular greenskin.
How Waaaghs! end
Most Waaaghs! fall apart on their own. Kill the Warboss, lose the war, or simply run out of enemies, and the horde dissolves back into infighting and old clan grudges.
Sometimes it doesn’t. A dominant enough Warboss can hold his boyz together and build something lasting. The Ork empire of Charadon is the classic example, surviving for thousands of years under a line of Warlords.
Variations exist too. A Speedwaaagh!, led by a Speedboss, is all about hitting the enemy fastest, and it’s usually packed with Speedfreaks, often Evil Sunz.
| Form | What it means |
|---|---|
| Waaagh! energy | Psychic field from gathered Orks; lets them sense who’s in charge |
| Waaagh! (event) | Mass invasion that grows while it keeps winning |
| Waaagh! (group) | The horde united under one Warboss |
| Warcry | The shout itself |
| Speedwaaagh! | Fast-attack variant led by a Speedboss |
Who’s leading them now
The most famous modern instigator is Warlord Ghazghkull Thraka. He’s behind the Second and Third Wars for Armageddon, and he’s the one pushing Da Great Waaagh!.

FAQ
Is a Waaagh! just the Ork army?
Not quite. The word covers the psychic field, the invasion, the horde and the warcry. In practice they usually all turn up together, which is why people use it loosely.
What happens when a Waaagh! is defeated?
It normally breaks apart. Without a Warboss or a fight, the warbands fall back into infighting and clan rivalry. A strong enough Warboss can sometimes hold it together instead.
Why do Ork weapons work better around Orks?
The Waaagh! field seems to make Ork tech function when a greenskin is nearby. Mechanicus observers noted it during the War of the Beast, though the exact mechanism isn’t settled.
