Dante

Dante is the Chapter Master of the Blood Angels, and he’s been doing that job for over eleven hundred years. He’s the oldest loyal Space Marine still walking around, which makes him both a legend and a living piece of Imperial history.

Who Dante is

Born Luis Dante on Baal Secundus in 447.M40, he grew up among the salt clans, nomadic harvesters who scraped a living from the moon’s dried-up seabeds. Malnutrition and radiation stunted his growth, and most clan members didn’t see thirty. He left in secret to take the Blood Angels’ Angel’s Fall trials, crossing the Great Salt Waste alone, and nearly died of thirst doing it.

He rose through the ranks as a Sergeant and then Captain of the 5th Company before becoming Chapter Master. He’s a Firstborn Astartes who later crossed the Rubicon Primaris, so he’s now Primaris too.

Why he matters

Dante’s longevity is the thing. Other Chapter Masters remember him being famous when they were still scouts, and that kind of reputation carries real weight in a galaxy where most Space Marines die young. He’s held in awe across the Imperium.

After the Great Rift tore the galaxy in half, Dante was named Lord Regent and Lord Warden of Imperium Nihilus, effectively the highest Imperial authority on the cut-off side of the rift. That’s a huge amount of responsibility for one man, and it’s a role he never asked for.

Key events

  • Devastation of Baal: Dante led the defence of the Blood Angels’ homeworld against a massive Tyranid hive fleet, a battle that nearly wiped the Chapter out before Guilliman’s arrival.
  • Arks of Omen: Dante played a major part in the events surrounding Abaddon’s push and the wider chaos of the Era Indomitus.
  • Rubicon Primaris: he survived the crossing, becoming one of the oldest Space Marines to do so.

Wargear and titles

Dante carries the Axe Mortalis and a heavy flamer sidearm, and he wears the Death Mask of Sanguinius, an artefact tied to the Blood Angels’ primarch. He’s also known as Commander Dante and Lord of the Angelic Host.

His full title list is long: Chapter Master of the Blood Angels, Lord Regent and Lord Warden of Imperium Nihilus. He’s still active in the Era Indomitus.

Connections to other lore

Dante’s story is inseparable from Sanguinius, the Blood Angels’ primarch, and from the Chapter’s genetic curse, the Black Rage and the Red Thirst. He’s also closely tied to Roboute Guilliman, who promoted him to his current regency role after the Devastation of Baal.

If you’re reading about the Blood Angels, Baal, or Imperium Nihilus, Dante is usually at the centre of it.
