Thunderhawk Gunship

The Thunderhawk Gunship is the Space Marines’ all-purpose flying brick: part troop transport, part heavy gunship, part bomber. It’s been the backbone of Chapter air fleets for ten thousand years, and it’s one of the few vehicles that can drop a squad into a warzone and then stick around to flatten it.

What it is

A Thunderhawk is a void-capable aircraft built to do several jobs at once. It can fly through atmosphere, operate in space, carry a full squad of power-armoured Marines, and hit ground targets hard enough to matter against tanks and Titans.

Every Space Marine Chapter keeps its own fleet of them, and they’ve been in service since the last years of the Great Crusade. The Sisters of Battle use them too, and there are dedicated variants for the Grey Knights and for Chaos warbands.

Why it replaced the Stormbird

The Thunderhawk was designed as a cheaper, lighter alternative to the huge Warhawk VI Stormbird. The idea was to give strike forces a flyer that didn’t need an entire battle company to justify its deployment.

It wasn’t popular at first. Marines who’d ridden Stormbirds thought the new gunship felt flimsy, and at least one Ultramarines captain predicted it’d be a stopgap. He was wrong. The Thunderhawk stuck around, and by the 41st Millennium it had become the standard Space Marine air support craft.

Armament and transport

The main gun sits on a dorsal mount with limited traverse. It’s usually a Turbo-laser Destructor, which is powerful enough to threaten a Scout Titan with a good shot, though some hulls swap it for a modified battle cannon for ground bombardment.

Secondary weapons vary, but a typical loadout includes lascannons on the wings and several twin-linked heavy bolters in hull sponsons. Each wing also has three bomb pylons, which can carry Hellstrike Missiles, bombs, or external fuel pods.

The gunner runs all of this remotely from the flight deck, with the Machine Spirit helping out. The flight deck sits above the forward hold, with the pilot, co-pilot, navigator, and gunner all up front.

  • Primary: dorsal Turbo-laser Destructor or battle cannon
  • Wings: two lascannons, plus bomb pylons for missiles or bombs
  • Hull: twin-linked heavy bolters in sponsons, more under the wing tips
  • Crew: pilot, co-pilot, navigator, gunner on the flight deck

Variants and users

The Thunderhawk Transporter trades some guns for cargo capacity, and the Annihilator packs extra firepower. The Shadowhawk is a stealthier version, and the Grey Knights and Adepta Sororitas have their own patterns.

Chaos warbands field captured or corrupted Thunderhawks, and some xenos forces have been known to use them too. In the Horus Heresy, they were a common sight on both sides of the war.

In games and in the hobby

The Thunderhawk has been part of Warhammer 40,000 since the 90s. A limited run of 500 metal kits sold out fast, and Forge World later produced a resin version with proper rules.

For a long time, a plastic Thunderhawk was a running joke among fans. That changed in 2021, when Games Workshop finally released one, and it’s since appeared in Aeronautica Imperialis and Legions Imperialis.
