Vigilus Secundus

Vigilus Secundus is the second world of the Vigilus System, a hive world in the Nachmund subsector of Segmentum Obscurus. It sits inside the Imperium Nihilus, on the far side of the Great Rift, and it’s caught up in the same strategic mess that made its sibling Vigilus famous.

What Vigilus Secundus actually is

Vigilus Secundus is one of the worlds orbiting the same star as Vigilus itself, the hive world that anchors the Nachmund Gauntlet. The system’s main claim to fame is that thin corridor of stable space cutting through the Cicatrix Maledictum, and every world in that system inherits some of its importance.

It’s worth being clear about one thing: most of the published lore about the Vigilus System focuses on Vigilus proper, not on Secundus. The second world gets far less screen time, and the sources that mention it are thin on detail. If you see a wiki page that treats Vigilus Secundus as a fully fleshed-out war zone, be sceptical, because the official material hasn’t gone that far.

Why the system matters at all

Vigilus is one of the only reliable routes between the two halves of the Imperium after the Great Rift tore the galaxy open. That makes the whole system a choke point, and choke points in the 41st Millennium attract everything with teeth.

The world is a hive world and a war world, tithed at Solutio Extremis, with a population somewhere around 167 billion. Its defenders rely on Bastion-class force fields, psychically charged barriers that knock intruders unconscious so the garrison can finish them off. That defensive tech came from an STC the local Tech-Priests found, and it’s been a cornerstone of the planet’s survival ever since.

The wars that define the region

Vigilus has been invaded by Orks, Genestealer Cults, Drukhari, Saim-Hann Aeldari, and multiple Chaos forces. The Pauper Princes, a Genestealer Cult that spent two centuries working its way into the nobility, sabotaged hive defences and opened the door for raiders and daemons alike.

Marneus Calgar of the Ultramarines famously dueled Abaddon the Despoiler at Saint’s Haven. He lost the fight, cut down by the daemon blade Drach’nyen, but the delay let an Aeldari vessel cripple Abaddon’s flagship and force a retreat. Calgar survived, barely.

Abaddon didn’t stay gone. Noctilith Crowns seeded the planet with warp corruption, and the war ground on. Vigilus was never truly saved, just kept standing.

How Vigilus Secundus fits in

Think of the Vigilus System as a package deal. The Gauntlet’s value comes from the system as a whole, and Secundus is part of that package. It shares the same star, the same strategic position, and the same exposure to the Nachmund war zone.

Beyond that, the lore is genuinely sparse. If you’re running a campaign or writing fan material, that gap is useful space, but don’t mistake it for established canon. The published sources haven’t given Vigilus Secundus its own detailed history yet.

FAQ

Is Vigilus Secundus the same as Vigilus?

No. Vigilus is the main hive world of the system and the one with the detailed lore. Vigilus Secundus is a separate world in the same system, and it gets far less attention in official sources.

Where is Vigilus Secundus located?

It’s in the Vigilus System, Nachmund subsector, Segmentum Obscurus, inside the Imperium Nihilus on the far side of the Great Rift.

Why is the Vigilus System so important?

It contains the Nachmund Gauntlet, one of the few stable routes through the Cicatrix Maledictum connecting the two halves of the Imperium. That makes it a strategic choke point worth fighting over.
