Kyril Sindermann

Kyril Sindermann is one of the quieter threads running through the Horus Heresy: a master speaker of the Great Crusade who watched the Emperor’s secular dream collapse and helped build the Inquisition out of the wreckage. If you care about how the Imperium turned from reason to faith, he’s a character worth knowing.

Who he was

Sindermann was Primary Iterator of the 63rd Expeditionary Fleet in the late Great Crusade, born on Terra around M30. He was a gifted orator and a true believer in the Imperial Truth, the Emperor’s project of a rational, godless human empire.

He’d been the star pupil of Evander Tobias, the iterator who trained the first of his kind. When cancer of the larynx took Tobias’s voice, he recommended Sindermann take his place. That’s how a teacher’s understudy ended up speaking for a Legion fleet.

Tutor to a Luna Wolf

Sindermann mentored Garviel Loken, the Luna Wolves captain, in the history and ideas of ancient Terra. He’d hand the young Astartes great tomes to read, part of Loken’s education in the Imperial Truth.

That friendship matters later. Loken is one of the few people Sindermann trusts when everything he believed starts coming apart.

The cracks in the truth

During the pacification of Sixty-Three-Nineteen, Sindermann and several remembrancers were attacked by a daemon that had possessed a Luna Wolves officer, Xavyer Jubal. It shook him badly. He started asking why the Emperor refused to even acknowledge such things existed.

He spent months digging through the libraries of the Vengeful Spirit. Working with Euphrati Keeler, another witness to the possession, he tried to decode parts of the Book of Lorgar using remembrancer images and text. Reading aloud, he fell into a trance and accidentally summoned a fiery daemon that wrecked the archive. Keeler exorcised it and slipped into a coma.

After that, Sindermann couldn’t hold on to the Imperial Truth. He’d seen too much evidence that older faiths were rooted in things ordinary people couldn’t control. He came to accept the Emperor as his saviour rather than his ruler.

From preacher to inquisitor

Sindermann survived Isstvan III, escaping the Vengeful Spirit with Keeler and Mersadie Oliton thanks to Captain Iacton Qruze. In the aftermath he became a preacher of the early Imperial Cult, the faith that would eventually swallow the Imperium whole.

He later took a new identity, Lastan Neemagiun Veritus, and became one of the founding members of the Inquisition. It’s a strange arc: the man who once argued against gods helped build the institution that would hunt heresy for the next ten thousand years.

He died in 546.M32 during the Beheading, poisoned by Drakan Vangorich, the Grand Master of Assassins. His reported last words were that he was there the day the Emperor slew Horus.
