Macharius was the Lord Commander Solar who led the Macharian Crusade, the largest Imperial conquest since the Great Crusade. In seven years his armies brought nearly a thousand worlds into the Imperium, and his story is the closest the Astra Militarum gets to a founding legend of its own.
Who macharius was
Born in 356.M41 on Donia, Macharius was the son of Planetary Governor Pella. He was already a celebrated Guard general in his twenties, and his role in putting down the Roxane Rebellion, where he rescued Lord Commander Solar Phillips, caught the attention of the High Lords of Terra.
Phillips took him as a protégé and named him successor. When Phillips died in the Lemort Landings in 386.M41, Macharius inherited the post, the youngest ever to hold it. He went to Terra once for his inauguration and never returned.
He died in 400.M41. Officially it was jungle fever. In truth he was assassinated by someone known only as Anna.
The macharian crusade
After early victories on Lands End, Morbellum and Jalfrezi III, Macharius announced his real ambition: a crusade to rival the Great Crusade itself. It began in 392.M41.
He didn’t fight it alone. His command included Sejanus, Borgen Crassus, Tarka, Arrian of the Mellenites, Lysander of Choripoli and Cyrus of Larrentine. Their combined armies formed the Grand Army of Reconquest, and over seven years they claimed close to a thousand worlds.
The crusade stalled at the edge of the galaxy. His troops had never lost to an enemy, but they refused to march into the psychic dark beyond known space. Macharius pushed on, and his army broke apart around him.
After his death
The conquests didn’t hold. Once Macharius was gone, his generals turned on each other in the Macharian Heresy, and much of what he’d taken had to be reconquered.
The Imperium remembers him differently. He was made a saint, and he’s now venerated as the Patron Saint of the Imperial Guard. Sergeant Leo Lemuel, who served under him, put it more bluntly: not a saint, but a very great man, and in some ways a very wicked one.
Why he matters in the lore
Macharius is the benchmark every Guard commander gets measured against, and the Macharian Crusade is the template for what Imperial ambition looks like at its best and most fragile.
His name also carries into the tabletop. The Macharius Heavy Tank is a super-heavy vehicle named for him, fielded by the Astra Militarum as a rolling tribute to the man who nearly out-conquered the Imperium’s own founding myth.
