Mekboy

A Mekboy is an Ork engineer, one of the Oddboyz born with an instinctive gift for machinery. He builds the guns, bikes, battlewagons, and spacecraft that keep a Waaagh! rolling, and without him the whole greenskin war machine falls apart.

What a Mekboy is

Mekboys (also called Mekaniaks or just Meks) are Orks who know how to weld, rivet, and hammer scrap into something that shoots, drives, or explodes. Nobody teaches them. The knowledge is genetic, the same way other Orks just know how to fight.

That instinct drives them to keep bolting bits on until the pile of junk looks like a working gun or a bionik leg. They don’t plan a design and refine it; they slap parts together until it works, then move on. The results are crude, loud, and held together by hope, but they work, often as well as the sleek gear the T’au or Eldar field.

Every warband needs them. Without Meks, vehicles break down, spacecraft stop flying, and a Waaagh! grinds to a halt before it gets anywhere. Some sources note that Orks would never get off their own planet without Mekboy output.

Why Mekboys matter

Meks sit near the centre of Ork society. They’re counted among its spiritual leaders because they’re at the heart of the Waa-Ork, the psychic event where the Ork race’s collective energy pours into building great war machines and then rampages across the galaxy.

On a practical level, a Warboss or Nob who wants a new Battlewagon or a custom shoota goes straight to a Mek and commissions it in his workshop. Payment usually comes in teef, scrap, or the chance to field-test something interesting.

Their technology works partly because Orks believe it should. A shoota held together by scrap functions because the Mek who built it and the Boy who fires it both expect it to. It’s a crude kind of genius, and it suits the greenskins perfectly.

In a scrap, Meks fight too, lugging around exotic contraptions of their own design. Speed Freeks in particular lean on them, since someone has to keep all those bikes running.

Ranks and variants

Mekboyz come in a few flavours, and the titles mostly track how much they’ve built and how much clout they’ve earned.

  • Spanna Boy (or Spanner): a Mek apprentice. They do the rounds keeping a settlement’s or ship’s technology working and often lead mobs of Lootas and Burna Boyz.
  • Big Mek: a senior Mek, larger and better equipped, heavily armed and armoured, often a warband’s chief engineer who fields exotic wargear.
  • Mek-Boss: the top of the ladder, a Mek who commands in his own right.
  • Mek musicians: Meks who build and play the deafening instruments and war drums some Ork forces march behind.
  • Boilerboy: what Feral Ork tribes call their Meks.

Notable Mekboys

A few Meks have earned names beyond their workshops. Nazdakka Boomsnik is remembered for his last words about a mysterious button, a classic bit of Mek showmanship. Bad Moons Big Mek Mogrok is another well-known figure, often pictured with a tellyport blasta.

Key facts

  • Mekboyz are Ork Oddboyz: engineers born with an innate gift for building and fixing machinery.
  • They build and maintain the guns, vehicles, and spacecraft that make a Waaagh! possible.
  • Their tech is crude and ramshackle, yet often as deadly as T’au or Eldar gear.
  • Ranks include Spanna Boy (apprentice), Big Mek, and Mek-Boss.
  • They’re central to the Waa-Ork, the psychic event behind Ork war machines.
  • Notable Meks include Nazdakka Boomsnik and Bad Moons Big Mek Mogrok.

FAQ

What’s the difference between a Mekboy and a Big Mek?

A Mekboy is the general term for any Ork engineer. A Big Mek is a senior, better-equipped one who’s usually the chief engineer of a warband, and a Mek-Boss outranks both.

Do Mekboyz have to learn engineering?

No. Their talent is innate and genetic, closer to instinct than skill. That’s why their work looks crude but still functions.

What’s a Spanna Boy?

A Spanna Boy, or Spanner, is a Mek apprentice. They keep a settlement’s or ship’s technology in working order and often lead Loota and Burna Boy mobs.

Why do Orks need Mekboyz for a Waaagh!?

Without Meks, vehicles and spacecraft break down and can’t be replaced. A Waaagh! needs working war machines to roll across a planet and into space.
