Mekboyz are the Ork engineers. If it shoots, drives, flies or explodes, a Mek probably built it, and it probably only works because he believes it should.
What a Mekboy actually is
Mekboyz (also called Mekaniaks, or just Meks) are one of the Oddboyz, Orks born with a genetic knack for building things. Every warband needs them. Without Meks, vehicles and spacecraft stop running and a proper Waaagh! never gets off the ground.
They’re not trained engineers. The skill is instinct, not learning, and it shows in the results: crude, riveted, welded-together machines that shouldn’t work but often hit just as hard as the sleek gear the T’au or Eldar field.
How Ork technology works
A Mek builds by grabbing scrap and hammering it into something that resembles a gun or a bionik leg. There’s no blueprint and no plan. Because every Mek does his own thing, Ork tech develops in a ramshackle, exploratory way, and the Meks wouldn’t have it any other way.
A lot of it seems to break the laws of physics just by functioning. The usual explanation among fans is the Waaagh! field: Orks believe a thing works, so it does. Meks sit close to the heart of that, since the psychic event known as the Waa-Ork runs through the building of great war machines and the rampage that follows.
Ranks and variants
Meks come in a few sizes, and the bigger ones tend to be the ones Warbosses actually listen to.
- Spanna Boy: the apprentice. Spanners keep settlements and ships in working order, and often lead mobs of Lootas and Burna Boyz.
- Big Mek: a senior Mek with real standing in the warband, usually loaded down with exotic wargear.
- Mek-Boss: the top of the ladder, running his own operation and commanding other Meks.
- Mek musicians: a stranger fringe role, Meks who put their talents into noise instead of guns.
What they build and what they carry
Warbosses and Nobz don’t order from a catalogue. They go straight to a Mek’s workshop and commission a Battlewagon or a new weapon on the spot, paying in teef, scrap, or the chance to field-test something interesting.
In a fight, Meks take the field themselves with crude but surprisingly exotic kit. Common examples include the kustom mega-blasta, the tellyport blasta, and various bionik replacements, alongside the usual shootas and skorchas.
| Variant | Role |

FAQ
Are Mekboyz psykers?
Not in the usual sense. They don’t cast powers, but they sit at the centre of the Waa-Ork, the psychic event where Ork belief and war-machine building feed into each other.
Why does Ork technology work at all?
In-universe it’s usually put down to the Waaagh! field: Orks believe a ramshackle gun will fire, so it does. Sources vary on how far that goes, and some just call it instinct and luck.
What’s the difference between a Mek and a Big Mek?
A Big Mek is a more senior, better-equipped Mek with real authority in a warband. A Mek-Boss sits above both, running the operation.
