Prospero

Prospero is the homeworld of Magnus the Red and his Thousand Sons legion, a planet of psychics that the Space Wolves burned during the Horus Heresy. For fans of 40k lore, it’s one of the most important turning points in the whole setting, the moment a loyal legion was pushed toward Chaos.

What Prospero was before the Heresy

During the Great Crusade, Prospero looked like a paradise: forests, plains, clear rivers, and oceans full of life. But almost nobody lived outside Tizca, the single city of white marble and glass where the population actually survived.

The rest of the planet was called the Desolation of Prospero. Long before the Imperium arrived, a warp event triggered a psychic explosion in the population, which drove the native psychneuein into a feeding frenzy that wiped out almost all sentient life. Only the fortified Tizcan commune held out, thanks to telekinetic shields that kept the psychneuein away.

  • Capital and only city: Tizca, a city of white marble and glass spires
  • Outside the walls: the Desolation of Prospero, unsafe for sentient life
  • The population survived by maintaining psychic shields against the psychneuein
  • Techno-psychic arrays controlled the weather and powered the city

The burning of Prospero

Leman Russ and his Censure Host attacked on the orders of the Emperor. They opened with an orbital bombardment meant to be an exterminatus, and the Desolation of Prospero was turned into a wasteland in minutes: forests burned to ash, grasslands blazed, mountains vanished, valleys filled with rubble, and the oceans boiled.

The battle devastated the legion and scattered its survivors. It’s the event that pushed the Thousand Sons firmly toward Chaos and Tzeentch, and it’s why the Space Wolves and Thousand Sons have hated each other ever since.

Prospero after the Heresy

For roughly ten thousand years, Prospero stayed a Dead World. It sat empty and broken until M42, when the Thousand Sons came back to rebuild it. The planet is now listed as their homeworld again, though its population is unclear and it’s still being repopulated.

Where Prospero sits in the galaxy

Prospero is in the Ultima Segmentum, in its own sector and subsector, within the Forzare System. That’s a long way from Terra, which is part of why the Censure Host’s attack could happen before anyone else could intervene.

FAQ

Who destroyed Prospero?

Leman Russ and the Space Wolves, acting as the Emperor’s Censure Host during the Horus Heresy. They bombarded the planet and fought the Thousand Sons in the Battle of Prospero.

Why did the Emperor order the attack?

The sources point to Magnus the Red’s use of sorcery and his defiance of the Edict of Nikaea, which banned psychic powers in the legions. The exact chain of events is debated, but the order came from the Emperor through Horus, who may have altered it.

Is Prospero still a dead world?

Not anymore. It stayed a Dead World for about ten thousand years, until the Thousand Sons returned in M42 to rebuild it.
