The Sothan Beacon

The Sothan Beacon is the Pharos, an ancient xenos device buried under Mount Pharos on the planet Sotha. During the Horus Heresy it let Roboute Guilliman’s Imperium Secundus talk and navigate across the galaxy without the Astronomican, which made it a target the Night Lords couldn’t ignore.

What the beacon actually was

The Pharos wasn’t built by humans. It was an empathic xenos machine, discovered after the Ultramarines Legion found Sotha during the Great Crusade, roughly 127 years before the Heresy. Guilliman locked the whole world down: only a small farming colony stayed, plus a survey team and the 199th Company as its shield garrison, the Aegida.

When the warsmith Barabas Dantioch got it working, the device opened instant communication with distant Macragge and acted as a directional beacon for navigation. In an era when the Astronomican’s light was obscured, that made it the spine of Imperium Secundus.

The Battle of Sotha

A blind spot near a local Mandeville Point had been marked as a Night Lords rendezvous during the Thramas Crusade. After the Dark Angels scattered their fleet, several Night Lords ships regrouped there, and when Krukesh the Pale saw the beacon fire up, he decided to take the system.

The fighting ran from infiltration and the Aegida platform to a full planetary assault and the defence of Sothopolis. Around 20,000 Night Lords faced roughly 3,000 Ultramarines, 500 Dark Angels, 50 Imperial Fists, Shattered Legion marines, Thallax and two Thanatar battle-automata. Alexis Polux led the loyalist stand; Dantioch died in the battle. The Night Lords were broken and their fleet mostly destroyed, though the Nightfall escaped.

What happened to Sotha afterwards

Sotha stayed the home world of the Scythes of the Emperor, the Chapter that grew out of that garrison and kept the scythe badge earned by its first workers. Their fortress-monastery, the space station Aegida, hung in orbit.

By M41 Sotha was the cardinal world of the Sotharan League, though it had drifted from direct Ultramar rule. Then the Second Tyrannic War hit. Hive Fleet Kraken left Sotha a dead world, and it’s only since the Dark Imperium era that recovery efforts have begun.

Sources differ on whether the Pharos survived the Heresy intact; some accounts say it was destroyed, others leave it ambiguous. Treat its final state as unresolved.

Why it matters

  • It was the communication and navigation backbone of Imperium Secundus.
  • It turned a quiet agri-world into a strategic target for the Night Lords.
  • The battle shaped the Scythes of the Emperor, who inherited Sotha and its scythe symbol.
  • Its loss and Sotha’s later death to Kraken close the loop on a world that never got to stay quiet.

Key facts

  • The Sothan Beacon is the Pharos, an empathic xenos device on Sotha.
  • It enabled instant communication and navigation for Imperium Secundus when the Astronomican was obscured.
  • The Night Lords attacked Sotha around 009.M31 to seize it, and lost.
  • Barabas Dantioch died in the battle; Alexis Polux led the defence.
  • Sotha later became the Scythes of the Emperor home world and was left a dead world by Hive Fleet Kraken.
