The Dark Cells are the Imperium’s deepest secret: a prison complex buried far below the Imperial Palace on Terra, where the Adeptus Custodes lock away things too dangerous to destroy and too valuable to forget. If even one of them got out, the Imperium might not survive it.
What the Dark Cells actually are
They’re oubliettes, which is a fancy word for dungeons you throw something into and then try to forget. The Dark Cells sit deep under the Imperial Palace, and they hold entities and artefacts dating back to Old Night, the long chaos after the Age of Strife. Some prisoners aren’t even properly alive anymore, but every single one of them still has an anima, a soul or vital spark.
The complex sprawls across 81 levels. Its security isn’t just locks and doors: there are rune locks, psychic wards, and sanctic circles worked into the corridors. A hundred Custodians patrol at all times, and no light or sound escapes the cells themselves. Even the Custodians find the atmosphere unsettling.
Who guards it, and how you get in
The Shadowkeepers, a Shield Host of the Adeptus Custodes, are the jailers. Their whole purpose is making sure nothing in the Dark Cells ever sees daylight. There’s also a little-known service entrance called the Door of Cogs, used by Adeptus Mechanicus tech-priests who maintain the arcane machinery. It connects to the Mechanicum ambassador enclave inside the Imperial Palace.
New threats get added over time. If something emerges in the galaxy that can’t be killed or contained anywhere else, the Dark Cells are where it ends up.
What’s locked inside
The prisoner list reads like a nightmare inventory. There’s the Slithering Dreamer, which escaped and was later killed by the Shadowkeeper Jaeharl Feldorus Ghau on Tarnus IV. Cypher and his Fallen Angels were held there until they broke out. The Vexen Cage is a psychic amplifier that can subdue and mentally enslave thousands. There’s also technology that once helped the Imperial Fists restore the Phalanx.
Other named horrors and relics include the Black Periapt of Rai’Then’yl, Subject XI, It That Craves, One Of The Fell, the Tri-Blight Amulet, the Lament of Unreason, the Sorrow of Karakalla, the Chalice of Darkalabaster, Souldelver, Eight of the Skull, the Sevenfold Trimiasma, the Granter of All Six Wishes, the Eater of Gods, the Serpent of Ending, and the Unmaker of Thrones. Not all of them are confirmed to still be inside.

The Great Rift and the empty cells
When the Great Rift tore across the galaxy, something went wrong in the Dark Cells. Some of them were found suddenly empty. The Shadowkeepers who’d been patrolling at the time were discovered slain. Nobody knows exactly what got out or where it went, and that’s arguably worse than knowing.
