The Ecclesiarchy is the Imperium’s official church, formally called the Adeptus Ministorum. It runs the Imperial Cult, and its word on faith is law across a million worlds.
What the Ecclesiarchy actually is
The Ecclesiarchy maintains and spreads the Imperial Creed, the only religion the Imperium officially allows. Its headquarters sit on Terra, where the Ecclesiarchal Palace covers most of the southernmost continent.
It’s not part of the Adeptus Terra. The Ministorum is a separate power in its own right, and the Ecclesiarch traditionally sits among the High Lords of Terra.
- Official name: Adeptus Ministorum
- Leader: the Ecclesiarch, always a High Lord of Terra
- Ruling body: the Holy Synod of Cardinals
- Founded in the early 32nd millennium
- Home: the Ecclesiarchal Palace on Terra
How it’s organised
Below the Ecclesiarch are several thousand Cardinals, who each head a diocese. The Imperium is carved into thousands of dioceses, usually one per world, though Terra itself has several.
A diocese splits into parishes centred on a shrine, each led by a Preacher. Pontifices sit between the two, overseeing groups of parishes within a diocese. Underneath it all sits the Creed Temporal, the bureaucracy that handles the church’s secular business.
| Rank | Role |
|---|---|
| Ecclesiarch | Heads the whole Ministorum, sits on the High Lords |
| Cardinal | Runs a diocese |
| Pontifex | Oversees several parishes in a diocese |
| Preacher | Leads a single parish |
The church’s armies
The Ecclesiarchy’s most famous force is the Adepta Sororitas, the Sisters of Battle. They exist partly because of a law passed after the Age of Apostasy: the church can’t maintain men under arms, so its military wing is made up of women.
That rule followed the Frateris Templar, the Ecclesiarchy’s old private army, which was disbanded after the Reign of Blood. The Frateris Militia, a loose levy of fanatics, still turns up when a world’s faith boils over. The church also fields Crusaders, Death Cults, and its own fleet.
- Adepta Sororitas (Sisters of Battle) are the main standing force
- Frateris Templar were the old army, dissolved after the Age of Apostasy
- Frateris Militia are zealous irregulars raised in times of crisis
A bloody history
The Ministorum grew out of the early Imperial Cult in the 32nd millennium, and the Confederation of Light was an early rival strain of the faith. The War of the Beast and the Plague of Unbelief both tested it.
Its darkest chapter is the Age of Apostasy, when the Ecclesiarch Goge Vandire seized power and ruled through terror. The Reign of Blood ended when the Daughters of the Emperor became the Brides of the Emperor, then turned on him and became the Sisters of Battle.
More recently, Roboute Guilliman created the rank of Militant-Apostolic to reform how the church’s military arm is led.

FAQ
What’s the difference between the Ecclesiarchy and the Adeptus Ministorum?
Nothing, really. Adeptus Ministorum is the formal name, and Ecclesiarchy is the common one. Both refer to the same organisation.
Why can’t the Ecclesiarchy have men under arms?
After Goge Vandire’s Reign of Blood, a decree barred the church from maintaining standing armies of men. That’s why the Sisters of Battle exist as its military wing.
Who leads the Ecclesiarchy?
The Ecclesiarch, who by tradition is always one of the High Lords of Terra. The ruling council below him is the Holy Synod of Cardinals.
