The Fire Wastes

The Fire Wastes is the big continent in Armageddon’s far north, and it’s basically the planet’s quarry. Almost everything the hive cities need to build weapons comes out of its mines, which is exactly why the Orks keep trying to take it.

What and where it is

The Fire Wastes sits in the far north of Armageddon, separate from the main continent where most of the fighting happens. It’s a continent of burning rock, dried-up riverbeds and tar pits. Not a place you’d want to visit.

Its job is simple: dig up ore, refine it, and ship it south so the hive cities can keep making weapons. Without the Fire Wastes, Armageddon’s war machine grinds to a halt.

Key locations

Most of the northern Fire Wastes is covered by the Sreya Rock Mountain Range, a stretch of burning rock where the air barely moves. The River Hesperos starts here and gets dammed at the Quaalaback Spur Hydro-Electric Dam, which powers the local mining operations.

The only real way through the mountains is the Koonanga Creek Canyon. It used to be a fast river, but now it’s a hot desert pass that kills even well-prepared travellers.

The Black Lung Tar Pits have been mined for thousands of years, and their output feeds industrial processes back on the main continent. The Serestus River skirts the pits, passing the Serestus River Refinery and Mineral Storage Facility before emptying into the Boiling Sea at the B’taani Bay Penal Colony.

The main port is Fire Harbour, with hundreds of miles of docks and rigging. It used to be the primary shipping hub for ore, but the wars have left it run-down and increasingly in Ork hands.

  • Sreya Rock Mountain Range: burning rocks, source of the River Hesperos.
  • Koonanga Creek Canyon: dried-up river pass, deadly to cross.
  • Black Lung Tar Pits: ancient mines feeding mainland industry.
  • Fire Harbour: the largest port, now largely fallen into disrepair.
  • Quaalaback Spur Dam: hydro-electric power for the mines.

The Third War for Armageddon

During the Third War for Armageddon, the Fire Wastes drew the attention of the Ork warlord Urgok the Unstoppable. Canoness Carmina of the Order of the Argent Shroud led Adepta Sororitas forces there, alongside a detachment of Flesh Tearers Space Marines.

The Imperium built the Iron Line to protect the mines and power generators, and to block the route from Ork Roks to the Cheya Ranas ore mines. The Sreya Rock defence outpost held out, its defence lasers and macro batteries proving effective against Ork Gargants. Most of Warlord Skrag’s Gargants and the Stompers Dreadnought warbands were destroyed.

The Canoness used the Flesh Tearers to push Orks into her waiting bolters, forcing Ruklum’s Big Gunz to retreat from Koonanga Creek Canyon. But the Flesh Tearers also massacred a unit of defenceless human militiamen at Gaius Point, earning them lasting hatred.

Chapter Master Gabriel Seth later learned the Canoness wanted the Flesh Tearers investigated by the Inquisition. He moved his chapter to the most inhospitable part of the region, where the Orks started calling them the Eaters of the Dead. The chapter risked being declared Excommunicate Traitoris.

Aftermath and current status

The Imperium held off the Orks in the Fire Wastes but didn’t make any real gains. Fighting in the north is expected to drag on for a long time.

Sources disagree on how much of the Fire Wastes the Imperium actually controls. Some accounts show the Iron Line and most key sites as contested, with the Imperium holding a slim majority in places like Sreya Rock and Koonanga Creek Canyon, while the Orks have the edge at the Serestus River Refinery.

FAQ

Where is the Fire Wastes?

It’s the large continent in the far north of Armageddon, separated from the main continent by the Boiling Sea.

Why does the Fire Wastes matter?

It’s where most of Armageddon’s ore comes from. The mines and refineries there supply the hive cities with the raw materials for weapons, so whoever holds the Fire Wastes has a big advantage.

What happened there during the Third War for Armageddon?

Urgok the Unstoppable led Orks against the Imperium, which was defended by the Adepta Sororitas under Canoness Carmina and a Flesh Tearers force. The Imperium held the Iron Line and Sreya Rock outpost, but the fighting ended in a bloody stalemate.
