Adeptus Astra Telepathica

The Adeptus Astra Telepathica is the branch of the Adeptus Terra that finds, tests, and trains psykers for the Imperium. Without it, there’d be no Astropaths, no interstellar messages, and no controlled psychic workforce at all.

What the adeptus astra telepathica does

It’s the Imperium’s psyker authority. The organisation recruits humans with psychic potential, screens them for corruption, and turns the survivors into Sanctioned Psykers. Most of the Imperium’s trained psykers pass through its hands at some point.

The work splits into two halves. The League of Black Ships handles recruitment, sweeping worlds for latent psykers and hauling them back to Terra. The Scholastia Psykana handles training. Both answer to the Master of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, who sits on an advisory council of several hundred senior officials drawn from the two divisions.

Astropaths and the Soul Binding

The most famous product of the Telepathica is the Astropath. These psykers undergo the Soul Binding, a ritual that channels a fragment of the Emperor’s will into them. It shields them from warp predators and hostile psychic influence, but it’s agonising, and it usually leaves them blind.

A rare few are judged strong enough to skip the ritual. They’re considered lucky, since they avoid the pain most Astropaths endure. Either way, Astropaths are the Imperium’s long-range communications network, sending and receiving messages across distances no conventional signal could cross.

Who guards the Black Ships

Imperial edict lets the Telepathica run its own operatives, but bans them from serving as wardens aboard their own vessels. A malignant psyker can too easily twist another telepath’s mind, so the guards have to be people whose faith makes them resistant.

Sources disagree on exactly who fills that role. Some accounts point to the Sisters of Battle or Inquisitorial Storm Troopers acting as custodians. Others describe the Black Sentinels as the Telepathica’s own armed force. The Sisters of Silence, a unit of Blanks, crewed the Black Ships during the Great Crusade, though the Sisterhood dwindled after the Horus Heresy and was formally disbanded after the Age of Apostasy. Active units have still been seen at the end of the 41st Millennium.

  • League of Black Ships: recruitment fleet that collects psykers.
  • Scholastia Psykana: the training arm.
  • Cryptaesthesians: decryption and internal affairs branch.
  • Sisters of Silence: Blank psyker-hunters, historically tied to the Black Ships.

Structure and oversight

The Telepathica answers to the Adeptus Terra and is headquartered in the Obsidian Keep on Terra. Its current leader is Master Zlatad Aph Kerapliades. It was established in M30, making it one of the older institutions of the modern Imperium.

The Inquisition works alongside it, purging deviant mutations while Coven Masters test for psychic potential. It’s a tense partnership, since both sides know an unsanctioned psyker is a disaster waiting to happen.
