Adeptus Astronomica

The Adeptus Astronomica is the branch of the Adeptus Terra that keeps the Astronomican burning. Without it, Imperial ships couldn’t navigate the warp, and the Imperium would fall apart.

What they do

The Astronomican is a psychic beacon that lets Navigators steer ships through the warp. The Adeptus Astronomica maintains it, working closely with the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, which supplies the psykers it needs.

Those psykers are trained to channel their mental energy into the beacon. The work destroys them, but there’s always another batch ready to take their place. That sacrifice is what keeps Imperial warp travel fast and (relatively) safe.

Where they’re based

The organisation is headquartered in the Forbidden Fortress on Terra. Even Inquisitors and Judges need an invitation to get inside.

Members rarely leave Terra. The leaders who oversee the Astronomican’s use are the exception and can travel freely.

How it’s organised

Most of the Adeptus Astronomica is made up of psykers. The non-psykers are hereditary servants who handle administration and maintenance. The whole thing runs like a training institute, with older members called Instructors, some of them High Instructors, overseeing the teaching.

The head of the organisation is the Master of the Astronomican, who also sits as a High Lord of Terra. The current holder is Lucius Throde.

  • Instructors and High Instructors run the training.
  • Administrative functionaries keep day to day operations going.
  • Trainees are called Acolytes.

Training and sacrifice

Young psykers arrive as Acolytes and spend a few months learning to release their psychic potential through mental exercises. Then they’re sent into the Chamber of the Astronomican, a vast spherical hall, to join the corps of ten thousand who power the beacon.

Once inside, they rarely last more than two or three months. Around a hundred die every day, their life force drained by the apparatus at the chamber’s centre. It’s a grim, constant turnover, but it’s the price of Humanity’s survival.

A monastic order

The Adeptus Astronomica is a monastic order, much like the Adeptus Mechanicus. Its members wear blue hooded robes, and fully trained members shave their heads before receiving the neural implants that will eventually drain them.

Because of their duties, members are rarely seen off Terra. The organisation’s leaders are the exception, since they need to travel to oversee the Astronomican’s use.
