Autarch

An Autarch is the supreme battlefield commander of an Asuryani Craftworld, a warrior who has walked the Path of the Warrior many times over. By mastering several Aspects of Khaine rather than settling into one, they gain the wide view needed to lead an entire war host. They’re more than strategists, though, they’ll step into the fight themselves when the moment calls for it.

Walking many paths

Most Eldar who take up the Path of the Warrior eventually leave it behind for good. They set down their shrine’s weapons and move on to another life. An Autarch does the opposite. They finish one Aspect, take up another, and keep going until they’ve learned as much of Khaine’s craft as a single soul can hold.

This breadth is what sets them apart from an Exarch. An Exarch is bound to one Aspect forever, which makes them a devastating specialist but limits their view. An Autarch has seen the whole picture. They know how each kind of Aspect Warrior fights, what they’re good at, and where they’ll struggle, and they use that knowledge to coordinate a war host so every unit works in sync. Because of this, both Seers and warriors hold them in high regard.

The Rhaan Lona and the Path of Command

When an Autarch has learned all they can from a shrine, they take part in a private rite called the Rhaan Lona, or Covenant of Wargift. The shrine’s Exarch lays out weapons, armour, and other wargear, and the Autarch picks one item to keep for life. This is why an Autarch often carries an unusual mix of gear, like a Howling Banshee mask alongside a Warp Spider jump generator or a Reaper launcher, since each piece is a memento of a different Path they’ve walked.

From there, they move onto the Path of Command. This is less a formal path and more an obsession. They begin to see every skirmish as part of a larger plan and every battle as a piece of a wider war. The ancient mythic leaders of the Eldar, figures like Eldanesh and Ulthanash, serve as their models.

Autarchs and Seers

Seers guide and counsel a Craftworld. They read the skein of fate, warn of what’s coming, and shape the Craftworld’s direction over the long term. Autarchs handle the war itself. When a fight has to be won, they’re the ones who plan it and lead it.

The two roles respect each other and often work together, but they aren’t the same job. A Farseer might see that a battle must be fought and why. An Autarch decides how. Their focus is the art of war in all its forms, and they rely on strategic insight and combat skill rather than psychic power.

Wargear and the battlefield

An Autarch’s kit reflects the Paths they’ve walked. They might carry a power weapon, a fusion gun, a reaper launcher, a star glaive, a Scorpion chainsword, or a death spinner. Some wear wings or a jump generator and fight from the air, diving into the thick of things to land a decisive strike.

They’re commanders first, but they’re more than backline generals. When the moment calls for it, an Autarch will spearhead an assault, duel an enemy champion, or tear apart a war machine. Winged Autarchs are especially known for leading from the front.

On the tabletop, this flexibility is their signature. Autarchs are flexible HQ choices for Aeldari armies, and the modern kit lets you build one to fit the war host they lead. You can mix wargear from several Aspects, choose a Howling Banshee mask, a regular helmet, or a bare head, and pick between male or female torsos. The model is compatible with the older Autarch kit, giving you plenty of modelling options.

  • Common weapons include the power sword, fusion gun, reaper launcher, death spinner, and avenger shuriken catapult
  • Wargear options reflect the specific Aspects the Autarch has walked
  • Winged Autarchs and those with Warp Spider jump generators are highly mobile variants
  • The Rhaan Lona item chosen from each shrine stays with the Autarch permanently

Notable Autarchs

Most Autarchs are known by their Craftworld and their deeds rather than as individuals in the wider lore. A few named Autarchs appear in novels and campaign books, often as commanders in major battles. Because sources vary and some names are tied to specific stories, it’s worth checking the source for whichever one you’re curious about.

FAQ

What is an Autarch in Warhammer 40k?

An Autarch is the supreme commander of an Asuryani Craftworld’s war host. They’ve walked multiple Warrior Paths, mastered several Aspects of Khaine, and now lead armies rather than just fighting in them.

How is an Autarch different from an Exarch?

An Exarch is bound to a single Aspect forever, which makes them a deadly specialist. An Autarch has moved through many Aspects and can see the whole battlefield, so they command instead of being locked into one role.

What is the Rhaan Lona?

It’s a ritual between an Autarch and an Exarch when the Autarch leaves a shrine. The Exarch presents the shrine’s wargear, and the Autarch chooses one item to keep for the rest of their life.

Do Autarchs fight on the front line?

Yes. They’re commanders first, but they’ll join the fight when it matters, leading assaults, duelling enemy leaders, or taking down war machines. Winged Autarchs are especially known for diving into combat.

Are Autarchs psykers?

No. They’re warriors and commanders, not Seers. Their strength comes from strategic insight and combat skill, not psychic power.
