The Confederation of Light was a religious order founded on Dimmamar that preached poverty and humility in an Imperium whose priests lived like kings. Twice it mattered: once as a heresy stamped out by the first War of Faith, and again as the movement that brought down Goge Vandire.
What the Confederation of Light believed
The order appeared sometime after the Horus Heresy. Like the Temple of the Saviour Emperor, it worshipped the Emperor as a god, so its doctrine wasn’t the problem.
Its problem was tone. The Confederation held that the Emperor’s sacrifice should be an example everyone follows, and it preached poverty, generosity and humility. That sat badly with Ecclesiarchy cardinals living in luxury.
The first War of Faith
By M32 the Adeptus Ministorum’s grip on Imperial religion was absolute, and the Confederation was the only rival left standing. The Ecclesiarch pushed a unanimous vote through the High Lords of Terra approving the first War of Faith.
The Confederation was declared heretical. Imperial Guard and Imperial Navy forces hit Dimmamar to wipe out what the Ecclesiarchy called a spiritual threat. Some followers escaped, but the order stopped being a real power in the Imperium.
Reborn under Sebastian Thor
The Confederation resurfaced in M36, during the Age of Apostasy. This time a young preacher named Sebastian Thor led it, and it named Ecclesiarch Goge Vandire a traitor outright.
Vandire’s Reign of Blood, his mismanagement of the Imperium and his oppressive policies had soured everything, so Thor’s message landed. Whole sectors threw their weight behind him.
Vandire sent his Frateris Templar to destroy Dimmamar, and the fleet vanished in a Warp storm known as the Storm of the Emperor’s Wrath. Segmentum Obscurus rose in rebellion soon after. Thor’s pilgrimage denounced Vandire and the Ecclesiarchy as the true heretics, and he gained backing from the Adeptus Mechanicus and Space Marines. Vandire died in the chaos that followed.
Trial, absolution and absorption
After the Wars of Apostasy, Thor and the Confederation were tried for rebellion. The testimony of the Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes kept both the man and the order from being branded heretical.
Thor became Ecclesiarch, and the Confederation of Light was folded into the Adeptus Ministorum. The movement that resisted the Ecclesiarchy ended up part of it. Note that the accounts here come from Codex: Sisters of Battle (2nd Edition), and later sources haven’t expanded much on the order itself.
