Overfiend

The Overfiend is the title an Ork warlord takes when he rules the Octarius Empire, a huge greenskin domain inside the Imperium’s territory. Several different Orks have held the name, and the title matters because Octarius became one of the bloodiest war zones in the galaxy.

What the title means

Overfiend isn’t a single Ork. It’s a rank or title claimed by whoever controls the Ork Empire of Octarius. When one warboss falls or leaves, another can step up and take the name.

That makes the Overfiend a moving target for the Imperium. Kill one and you haven’t ended the empire, you’ve just created a vacancy.

Known Overfiends

A few names stand out in the records, and they cover different points in the sector’s history.

NameWhen they ruled
BlaktoofOverfiend during Hive Fleet Leviathan’s invasion of Octarius
Gorsnik MagashOverfiend at the time of the Third War for Armageddon
Zog SteeltoofActed as Overfiend while Gorsnik was away at Armageddon
Unnamed Overfiend of OctariaKilled by the Swarmlord during the fall of Octaria, late in the Octarius War

The Octarius War

Octarius is where the Imperium’s problems got out of hand. The Ork empire there grew strong enough that the Imperium eventually faced a choice between fighting it and letting something worse do the job.

That something worse was Hive Fleet Leviathan. The Tyranids hit the Octarius sector and the two xenos powers tore into each other. For the Imperium it was a gamble: let the monsters bleed each other dry, or step in.

It didn’t stay contained. The war spilled across worlds, and by the later stages an Overfiend was killed when Octaria fell to the Swarmlord.

The Overfiend in fiction

The Overfiend also gives its name to a Black Library anthology by David Annandale, released in June 2014 as part of the Space Marine Battles series.

It collects three novellas, Stormseer, Shadow Captain and Forge Master. The framing story has Salamanders, White Scars and Raven Guard Marines, plus Astra Militarum and some Eldar allies, hitting the Octarius system to break the Ork hold there.

Worth noting: the anthology’s Overfiend and the tabletop title aren’t quite the same thing. The book is a story collection, not a rules source.
